Always surprises me why the Boxer engines aren't used more for racing as they help get a very low CoG.
Good question : I was always told it was the problem of lubrication the 'upper' faces of the cylinder when the cylinders lie flat, instead of more upright. Although this car's big brother, the 917 managed it, and it's seems not to worry all the road going Porsche's with flat engines.Gorgeous car, but I'm waiting for the one with a Super Beetle body on it!
Article seems to be more about the history of the 906 rather than the rebuild of this particular car, but it was a very interesting read, nonetheless.
Can someone explain why Porsche were able to have the 904, 906, and 908, when they couldn't call the 911 "901" because of Peugeot? Did the copyright/patent only apply to roadcars?

The Porsche 906 is not a well-known piece of automotive history. Indeed, I confess never to have heard of it until this story popped into my inbox (writes James Richardson).
James, are you serious? Google "Porsche 906" - 136,000 results.
Yahoo "Porsche 906" - 350,00 results.
Bing "Porsche 906" - 12,300,000 results (!)
It's in the title of half-a-dozen books. It's an integral part of the 904/6/7/8/9/10/17 glory years.
You got to do a bit more studying-up, me boy.
The 906 is indeed an iconic car and significant in the history and development of the Porsche marque. Two more are currently being recreated here in the UK. Fortunately the original drawings in their fine detail survive. The complexity of the tube frame chassis is considerable but thanks to CNC laser cutting technology all of the joints can be formed precisely so it goes together like a jigsaw puzzle.
By far and away the most beautiful Porsche ever. 917 was awesome but no looker. Early 911 is pretty but...
I wonder why, there has never been a replica? Or has there? I suppose given it's extreme low profile it might be a little difficult to source an engine to fit? Could something like a Subaru boxer unit fit?

Seem to be a couple of places doing replicas

I admit I am not the biggest fan of Porsche and being of a youthful disposition (23) that whole era was somewhat before my time!

It's acceptable that you are not the biggest fan of Porsche, so long as you are even less of a fan of Ferrari.
Spa6 Masters Sports cars:
The Porsche 906 or Carrera 6 was the last street-legal racing car from Porsche.
Only 50 of these 580 kgs cars were built.
Flat six 901/20 6 220 brake behind the drivers ears.
Despite the 280 kmh this Pork ended up with an unhealthy 3:06 best lap.
Anorak facts: a privately entered 906 secured an overall victory at the 1966 Targa Florio when the factory cars failed.
At the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 906 placed 4-5-6-7 behind three Ford GT40 Mk IIs.
