I think the apparent diversion to Edmundbuyers may have been my fault, due to lack of experience with multiple locations on Google Maps. rotate
Not at all. When you navigate by using place names (i.e. Edmundbyers to Saughtree) it automatically picks what it thinks is the optimum route between them by default.
Which is not necessarily the one you had in mind... rolleyes

My intended route goes through Edmundbyers, tracking the B6306 and B6320 (then onto an unnamed road up through Kielder) leaving that chunk of the A68 out altogether. https://goo.gl/maps/be3nytVCDa12
The B6306 goes via Blanchland. Unless you have a particular reason to visit Edmundbyers (e.g. the Punch Bowl Inn) there is a more direct route to Blanchland via Meadows Edge..

The usual caveat about sheep of course.

Btw, around the half way point there is a wicked little chicane to add some spice to the mix. smile
And when you're thundering down Bale Hill be aware that there is cattle grid just before the tree line.

I expected to come across cows on the road at some point but I never thought I'd end up staring down a bull-

Picture doesn't do justice to the thing's size, was more than a touch nervous when it stopped right by my window, towering over the whole car, especially in a soft top! Was with a few calves too, what on earth would you feel like/do in a Caterham?!

Couple of other pics from the week-

It is cool there are still many parts of the country where livestock roam (relatively) free. In a crowded island obsessed with health and safety and ultra-intensive land management, it warms the old cockles to see cows and sheeps and other animals just wandering about the road without a care in the world.

Got a lot on my plate atm so I have picked the easiest one. smile

It's the gun on the left in front of the Clan Macrae Roll of Honour 1914-18 at Eilean Donan Castle.
Lt Colonel John McCrae wrote one of most well known poems of WW1 - 'In Flanders Fields'.

Of course, but I'm genuinely curious as to how aggressive a bull surrounded by a load of cows and calves could become if you were a bit more exposed.

After reflecting a tad today, I've come to the conclusion that the S1 may not be as bad as I've made out.

Bar the fact it doesn't have cruise control, it made for a ridiculously comfortable journey up to Scotland and back, and was capable on the open roads of Skye. I'd likely not fancy the single track up there in it - that's better suited to the MR2 or suchlike - but it wasn't disappointing.

I just wish I had kept the MR2 as well!

Off to Scotland next Friday for 7 days, never been before so looking forward to it. Three of us so unfortunately not taking my MX5 (unless... scratchchin), but I'd like to take in some decent roads where I can.

https://goo.gl/maps/iXQ4YFwxXYq I've quickly put these on here to show where we're stopping, though I have been looking at routes myself in more detail.

Overnight stop in Lockerbie, then I think I may go through to Ardfern A82/A83; staying there 3 nights, so have some time to explore the area anyway. Intention is to take the whole day to reach Gleneagles from there, so going a little out of the way within reason is possible. I was thinking to go via Glencoe initially, and worked out a few routes from there, but I'm not sure what I might be missing that's particularly good and isn't immediately obvious.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Also, anyone remember how/where to save to My Maps on google?

I remember it's not the same as directions straight from viewing regular maps, you need to set points with pins and drag out routes manually. I need to get the route sections into that so I can export the XML to use with the command line application I have that converts routes to Merc satnav format. (it says "make a U turn then make a U turn" on every drag point you make, but hey, it's great that you can convert them and it is workable!).

Nothing wrong with your route from Ardfern to Tyndrum via Dalmally, however if I had the whole day to reach Gleneagles I would go the long way round.smile
No visit to Glencoe should omit the B863 (aka the 'Scotsburgring'.) - https://goo.gl/maps/2VGaxNWrQ512

Somehow I've missed that road, twice. I've added it to the list for next time, thanks.

Are you able to drive more each day or spend another day in Scotland? You're missing lots of the great sights (NW coast)
