If you have already covered the Highlands I would suggest spending more time on the islands, they are very different. As has been mentioned getting of the main roads is a must, the place I stayed (in Carnish) has closed now, but the drive round to Carnish on the west coast of Lewis was a highlight.
The Gmap above was just indication of how we would get to the outer islands from the mainland.

That being said, would welcome recommendations for routes, viewing points, restaurants and places to stay on Lewis/Harris please.

We're all sorted for the mainland, but never been to Harris/Lewis.

Sadly, the hotel we always stayed (in Rodel, Harris) is now closed, so can’t help... I now book In a dog friendly holiday let for a week or two, and just go over when the weather is good.

If you have no dog... fly from Glasgow to Barra, land on the beach and hire a car from Barra car hire.

I've always gone with AirBnB and the like for accommodation. You can get some cracking cosy cottages for not a lot of money.

Most of the places I visited are on the blog post I wrote at the time:
Lewis -> http://blog.lewiscraik.co.uk/2012/08/22/scottish-r...
Harris -> http://blog.lewiscraik.co.uk/2012/08/23/scottish-r...

Calanish Stones and Carloway Broch on the west coast are worth a visit and I'd recomend staying on the south west part of Lewis Uig/Carnish etc, although the place I stayed at has closed now.

For those needing a fix on the joys of Highland roads, there's a series of Monty Hall's great escape to around Applecross. I fully expected to see GC in all his glory up on the roof. BBC 2 ( i THINK) on iPlayer.

Ha... My dog and Reuben played together on the sand a few times - and Monty spent much of the time in the Inn (Didn't see that bit of film!)

What are you insinuating? That he spent most of his time at the inn and not on the Croft, growing vegetables and tending to his pigs.
Anyway,it was getting rather crowded on the beach and I’m glad he’s gone.

What was so nice in all of it, was that Reuben up to a day or two before the trip had been a rescue dog, confined to a small pen.

They are currently digging up the road by me...

Out of interest the cycle event on 12th May WILL go ahead as they are stopping work to let the nutters up the hill.

(In case any nutters are in here)

If I read it correctly it's going to be open at weekends, is that right?

That’s my understanding too, but as I’m in Gloucester I take no responsibility if I’m wrong. biglaugh

That's a pest, right at what I find is the best time of year for heading that direction.

That's what the link says.

I have read elsewhere that the coast road from Shieldaig will remain open.

Maybe GC, being local, can confirm.

Re: Bealach closure: Okay... so this is a tricky one.

This was written in an e mail from the person running the project (regarding the bike race on 12th May)

"We have worked closely with the Applecross Community for the closures and have agreed times for the road being open during the week and weekend. We would like to assure you that we will stand-down for Saturday the 12th May to allow for this event to take place and return to our works on the Sunday."

At the moment they are working 7 days a week (on the coast road - though it's not shut... just traffic lights), and I think they will do so up the Bealach (as implied in the statement above)... but due to the nature of the road, they'll shut completely.

However, you'll also see that they are opening it at certain times every day to let locals 'out'.

I will make inquiries and find out when those times are, and post here.

Meanwhile the coast road will be open so you can always get to Applecross that way. Easter will be heaving!

Whilst I'm here, have a pretty pic taken yesterday:
