That section of road quite often has deer on it IME, North of the single track stuff. The first time I drove it circa 10 years ago, it was late evening in the summer, the sun was going down, and at the top of a slight crest in the middle of the road was a huge stag, back-lit by the dying sun so all we seen was a glorious orangey/purple sky, with the black outline of this magnificent creature.
No idea why I didn't stop and take a picture, but the image in my head will never leave me.

Back in late September 2016 I was on the A837 past Ardvreck Castle heading for my overnight stop in Lochinver. No idea why I didn't stop and take a picture, but the image in my head will never leave me.
Pitch dark (around 8.45pm). Came round a corner to be suddenly confronted by two close set pinpoints of light.
My first (stupid) thought was...... I didn't realise that any cat's eyes had been installed on this stretch since I last drove it.
Until it belatedly dawned on me that of course no such thing had occurred (or was likely to).
By the time I got my act together I was staring straight at an enormous stag. ABS to the rescue!
Having recovered my composure somewhat I noticed several more shadowy shapes lurking in the scrub off road.
I needed a stiff whisky (or two) after I got to my destination.

Will be there again on Sunday 22nd en route to Durness.
Off on Wednesday. Once we reach Fort William we go Mallaig>Skye>Harris/Lewis>Ullapool>Applecross>Mull.
Where are the places to avoid £££ wise when looking to fill up with derv? I understand the islands get 5p/litre off but don't know if that makes it cheaper? Or is there not much in it?

Mallaig is in the fuel rebate area, but I'm not sure how the prices would compare to Ft William. Where are the places to avoid £££ wise when looking to fill up with derv? I understand the islands get 5p/litre off but don't know if that makes it cheaper? Or is there not much in it?
Ullapool and Applecross are also in fuel rebate areas. As are all the isands you mention.
But what the actual prices are and how they compare to other places in the Highlands but not in a rebate area, I'm not sure.
But, why worry about a few pence a litre, enjoy the trip and spend money in rural places even of you don't need to, that way the places may still be open and trading when you are back and do need them.
