Lancaster to Kylesku is a shalp.. probably 7 hours in winter.. traffic in summer will screw that figure. If I were you I’d leave seriously early doors to get past Glasgow before rush hour.

Loads of places en route that are worth mentioning, but you’ll see them all and stop anyway!

Top tip. Take a camera.

One that he won't without a slight detour off the main road. Balnakiel*
Followed by a stroll along the beach.
A couple of miles to east is the largest sea cave in the UK: Smoo Cave.

Depending on timing, stop for a coffee/tea at at the Pier Cafe in Lairg: the cakes are scrumptious!

If you are at Durness, then put a day aside and get the passenger 'ferry' across the Kyle and take the minibus to Cape Wrath. It uses an old military track for the 11miles across the wildest and emptiest scenery most of us will ever see. Great wildlife, huge cliffs and amazing views from Cape Wrath itself. The road crosses a live firing range , and is shut during exercises. I have seen several of these, including a large US Navy force which was firing its guns from a long way out at sea to the target - a rocky island just off the coast. The noise was extraordinary - huge metallic bang, slight whistle and then CRUMP .

"There's also the unasumming but excellent Alt Inn in Assynt. This was the view outside as the sun set after dinner during our stay.
The iconic moutains of Assynt looked fantastic silhouetted against that dramatic sunset."

You're slipping up RD, only one of those mountains is in Assynt.

The other Cul Mor (on the left), is in Coigach.

Tell me about it, when touring last month one of our dogs needed to see an out of hours vet one evening. Once we'd got around the lack of a working mobile phone signal (phone box!) We had to go from west of Gairloch to the vet who wasn't far short of Inverness to the east.... About 4 hours all in....

Indeed. We have to do a 5 hour trip next week for a yearly dog jab. Still, the other side of the coin is that if we want to see a doctor, we get an appointment within half an hour, if we need to go to hospital we get an air ambulance landing at the end of the drive, and we don't need any police as there is virtually no crime! (Was amused at the locking car post earlier... I, and nobody I know have locked a car here in 20 years).

Ups and downs. I'll take the ups. smile
