Thanks, checked out a couple of vids and because of the way it works it actually looks better than a lot of ferries. If the weather is decent I think we’ll go that way!
It's a very short crossing and well sheltered so very rarely gets cancelled. The drive to Glenelg is fab too - some great views.CABC said:

ie no delays just rocking up.
here ya go >>> http://skyeferry.co.uk/ie no delays just rocking up.
You need cash... no card payments.

Lotus Evora. It’s not that low really, but has quite a long front overhang so no steep ramps. It’ll be fine on the roads, have been to Skye once before and the highlands many times so have an idea what to expect
Ah. I have an Evora too. I think there's a chance you might catch the splitter unfortunately. From memory driving onto the ferry should be okay but there's an angle when you exit.CABC said:

Yep - just rock up and they go when there are customers. Proper old school.ie no delays just rocking up.
I would like to propose a £100 per day tax on camper vans.
This could supplement the income of the region, making up for the monies not spent on accommodation and restaurants. It would hopefully also be a deterrent to people hiring these mobile blocks.
PS many thanks to the few vans who did pull in to passing places. I hope you saw my thank you. Your courtesy was all too rare.

It can be irritating but people in campers (not to mention birdwatchers, walkers , anglers and deer stalkers )have been going up to the Highlands far , far longer than blokes in fast cars and staying , usually , for far longer . The reason so many of us love it up there is that one leaves all that red mist angst at home so if you get held up , then park up for five and enjoy the view. And don't start talking about banning vehicles of any type as I can think of some marques that would get banned long before a camper...This could supplement the income of the region, making up for the monies not spent on accommodation and restaurants. For anyone planning on using the south Strome road between Lochcarron and Auchtertyre or Plockton I have been hearing of long delays.
There are temporary road closures to clear loose rock with a convoy system onto the adjacent railway tracks to keep traffic moving.
Apparently the Cooncil underestimated the road traffic as well as the number of trains on the route meaning very long queues to get a convoy slot through. Supposedly they have had to instal portaloos the delays have been that bad ...............

Yep... a lot depend what time you arrive. If it's anywhere near a train, you'll be a while (as you have to drive on the track). The road is completely closed from 10 pm to 7 am.There are temporary road closures to clear loose rock with a convoy system onto the adjacent railway tracks to keep traffic moving.

Can vouch for that - went out for a run on bike Friday from Aberdeenshire, planning to loop round from Achnasheen to Dornie back to east via Spean Bridge and Newtonmore. There were signs promising long delays but when I arrived at Stomeferry roadworks was greeted by a longinsh queue and sign that said "Next convoy at 2:25 pm". Time was 1:15 pm. Went back the way I came. Weather not great on west anyway, fine east of Inverness though.
Interesting couple of days getting up to Skye! B&B owner in Fort William was telling tales (unprompted) of how promotion of the NC500 was causing nightmares for hotel owning friends who were massively oversubscribed. Groups of 12 turning up unannounced when already full, no other accommodation within 60 miles and unhappy faces all round.
It's a big draw for foreign tourists as well as us PH types apparently even drawing large groups from China as well as Europe. It's such a shame it's gone a bit OTT
On the other hand, once stories of the state of the roads get out then maybe it'll come to a natural end. Massive potholes and generally knackered surfaces even on major A roads. Not seen anything this bad here before, it's like NW Scotland is suddenly a third-world country.

It's nothing new. This is the latest example of the saga with the Stromeferry bypass road which has been ongoing for nearly 30 years.

I’m far from a supporter of hers but to be fair that’s not unreasonable. NYC has city, state, tourist and god knows what other taxes. An invoice after a few nights easily runs into many pages. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-scotland-poli...
Then again, the money may not go to the highlands...

just back from doing the NC500 - not a single issue (in 2000 miles) with accommodation or road surfaces, motorhomes pulled over, standard of driving was better than down south, maybe because end of September is out of season?
Now +/- 10% of the vehicles compared to July/August.GetCarter said:

I never knew it went that mental! - no wonder the roads cannot cope!
(Off to Mallaig early November, hope to find some decent roads down there, normally I spend my time further north.)
BTW, Mr Carter, just to say I really like your tweet of day from Saturday,
Before I start looking into it myself, how might I be able to obtain a print?
