Impressed, is there something in the meta data or do you just know the area well?
Didn't look at the meta data. I just followed the trail left by GC. No: never been to the Outer Hebrides. Still on my 'to do' list

I'll take a punt that he doesn't know that road that well.

No idea where you got that idea. Been past the end of your drive many times but we've never met,
I'm up again in October with a couple of friends who are 'Highland virgins'.
Our itinerary will definitely include Applecross and the coast road.

Should say that I am very proud to be Scottish and have tried to holiday in Scotland more than a few times in the last few years and frankly the approach by lots of pubs, restaurants etc is very poor. Examples are at 14.05 we are told sorry kitchens closed so no lunch, similar at 19.35, sorry kitchen closes at 19.30 so no dinner. I have been round the NC500 twice in the last 2 years and apart from the spectacular scenery the overall experience falls very short of what I have experienced in other parts of Europe. Probably not a surprise then that the most flexible approach and best food quality we had was from Spanish owners during our first NC500 trip. Also try taking anyone under 18 for a meal after 20.30 and hey it's not allowed. Contrast that with a few years ago in a remote village in Menorca when we arrived at 23.00, we were welcomed with open arms, even with under 18s and told, no problem we will keep the kitchen open a bit longer to make sure you get fed. We have had similar experiences in other parts of Europe, Portugal for example where we can stroll around feeling safe at around 23.00 and pop into a bar where the adults can have alcohol if they wish and the kids can have soft drinks, ice cream etc., Scotland (and I suspect the SNP Nanny State Politics don't help) needs to wake up to what is acceptable customer service in most of Europe. Sorry for the rant but it's really pissed me off when trying to support my own country that I can always get a better customer experience anywhere else in Europe. I would love to spend my money supporting my own country but until they can match the quality of service available elsewhere in Europe it's very hard to justify doing so.

Some thoughts and ideas after doing the 500 last week in a Caterham 7 with a mate in the same, hope it's of use:-
1. Don't do the single track roads (Applecross, Lochcarron, Kylesku to Tongue etc) in groups larger than 2 cars; the passing places accommodate 2/3 vehicles at best and you will be in a world of frustration if you run together in a group.
2. Other vehicles will let you overtake in the passing places but please do the same for others; the fastest car we met was an 04 plate PT cruiser driven by a local
3. Don't worry re fuel. We took spare cans and never got close to needing them filling just north of Inverness, Ullapool and Wick
4. Book accommodation early, we booked in Sept (even earlier than I had remembered) and places were filling up then
5.We went clockwise which was a good idea as we covering route in 2 days. This meant we had the hardest, most tiring bit first. If you do the same, make Ullapool your overnight; the east coast roads are much less demanding than the west
6. Lastly, food and drink prices are on a par with London, be prepared!
7. Enjoy it, the scenery is Lord of the Rings esque
