Been driving up here many times over the years, love the place for its people and roads.
Latest was last week, never been in August before, stopped for fuel in Kinlochewe and couldn't get back in the car quick enough. Got eaten alive by the dreaded midges, had heard they were bad but now I know, no wonder a chap working there was kitted out in netting.
Yep... filling stations are amongst the worst places you can be. They are attracted by the heat of the car and you're standing there filling up unable to be anything other than a free meal!Latest was last week, never been in August before, stopped for fuel in Kinlochewe and couldn't get back in the car quick enough. Next month, for 6 months, we have no traffic, no motorhomes, no motorbikes and no PH blats. Thank God.
May I apologise, I will be blatting the area in November ish, I hope! (just me, and as I have been visiting for the last 10 years am I assumed local enough?)
There was a nose to tail blat that passed earlier this year that consisted of 37 cars - on the single track. You can imagine how it went when they met a caravan and several motorhomes coming in the opposite direction.

I can't think of anything worse! Apart from the nuisance large groups cause to other road users, it's so frustrating being one of them. Why do they do it? Leave a five minute gap (at least) don't follow the arse of another car for mile after mile!
(I'll feel better after another coffee....)

What are the roads like after Christmas and over new year, fancy going up in my campervan as far north (or Lewis again) to see if I can see the Northern Lights.... Hopefully I won't be holding up any driving gods on tour that time of year, or the roads won't be snow bound!
Roads are empty at that time of year (about 5 cars an hour), but days are REALLY short. As for northern lights - check the weather forecast as (obv) it's often cloudy at thay time of year.ETA. New Year is more busy than Christmas as quite a few turn up to do the Highland thing.

I think you can relax, it will only be me and a couple of friends, who have never been that far north before, bimbling along past your gaff. We'll be too busy stuffing our faces/appreciating the scenery/taking pics/etc, etc.on this trip to be travelling at Warp Factor 9.
When travelling in a group convoy (around 10-12 cars) on single track roads the solution which works for me is 'Noah's Ark'.
Was up last week - lovely. Mostly between Mallaig, Skye and up to Loch Assynt for a bit. Probably waking the neighbourhood (i try to be courteous), but glad to get that AMR noise in those hills, lovely experience.
Have to say we spent some decent amount of time looking at land and property along the west coast, you can see why people settle there.
Saw a host of nice metal, including a kuwait plated 997.2 gt3rs in a very rare colour, and at least one of every current bike that costs over £20k. nice to see (and hear) them used!

I had a long one up there last Thursday, from Stirling up to Ullapool via Kyle of Lochalsh. Wanted to avoid missing out on dinner, so did the last 75 miles or so at dusk in a decent chunk less than 75 mins to get there by 8pm. The views between Gairloch and Ullapool, being chased by the setting sun, were amazing.
Next day was across to JoG via Cape Wrath etc. Quiet and simply stunning.

Started to get quieter again
We will be hurrying through the Highlands on the LeJog classic car rallye during the night Monday-Tuesday next week.Rough schedule will probably be to have dinner at the Kyle of Lochalsh hotel on the 9th, then turn north and drive The Pass of the Cattle, then up to Ullapool, then the coast road to Lochinver, then along the north coast and the devil knows what else.

Just a small note about deer and roads and night and probably not the brightest HID bulbs out there.. I was up in Lochinver early November and had to brake fairly sharply for suicidal deer. Amazing roads!
