But how often, aside from the hours of say midnight to 5am, will ANY UK road (where the road itself is safe enough) be quiet enough??? It's just not sensible, IMHO.

Every time I go on the 4 lane each way section of the A1 south of Peterborough it seems very quiet.

It's a wide road, and it can absorb a lot of traffic. 120 mph would be no problem. 150 mph would be achievable.

I am reminded of the German 911 driver travelling up the A1 to Newcastle. He got an 800 quid fine for driving at what he considered a reasonable and prudent 150 mph - and the A1 was only two lanes each way then.

He really didn't see what the fuss was all about - bet he hasn't visited UK again.

the A1 and indeed the A19 up to the north east (newcastle/sunderland) are both easily capable of sustaining safe travel very late at night at speeds around twice the limit

and the 4 lane bit at peterborough on the A1 is so good that even the numpties cruise at 90 - 100

Recent events on a nice quiet "autobahn" have forced me to reconsider my position.

I still don't think it's SENSIBLE to do over 120/130 on a UK M-way, certainly not on a sustained basis, but I no longer claim that it is ALWAYS or inherently unsafe.

If visibility is good (including streetlit M-ways at night), and if traffic is very light-to-nonexistent, then fire away!

If we're all going to go out and use these fast, camera-free roads, can I suggest we co-ordinate ourselves into some sort of rota system? I mean, no offence, but if I'm out there somewhere giving it beans, I don't want to meet one of you nutters coming the other way...

lol

Im sure the police now have a rota for these roads aswell

Reading all these posts about speed on single carriageways, one thing seems obvious to me: those of you that think any speed on a B-road is acceptable have never known anyone to be killed by another's irresponsible driving.

I'm not saying that no driver can drive safely at 120+ mph on a B-road, but those drivers that fling their cars into apexes on blind corners must have some kind of death wish. Moreover, our B roads are littered with bumps and cambers that can throw the car unexpectedly into the oncoming lane, and that becomes more likely at higher speeds regardless of how good a driver you may be.

My point is this: speed limits are there to protect us from idiots. A lot of drivers think they're better than they are, ignore those limits and in in doing so potentially endager the lifes of others. OF COURSE there are times when doing 120mph on a B-road might be acceptable, e.g. when you know the road and can see a long distance ahead of you. As a rule though, stick to those speeds (and high cornering speeds) on a track: cars are all going the same way and if you do crash you're unlikely to endanger others.

A friend of a friend killed his girlfriend by swerving to avoid an oncoming car a couple of weeks back. The other driver stopped and is being prosectuted. But think how they both feel now.

"Swerving to avoid an oncoming car" would imply that there was more than high speed involved. A friend of mine was killed by a car that was speeding. The fact that she pulled out 20 yards in front of it onto an NSL A road is, of course, entirely irrelevant .

I regularly exceed 120mph on certain B roads, and i've never put myself or others in danger. There are other b roads that i'd never exceed 30mph on. But don't let that get in the way of a nice emotional rant.

Yeah hey you know something? There was something more than speed involved. A corner and an idiot on the wrong side of the road driving too fast for the conditions. The fact that speed and cutting blind corners are synonymous for some is hardly 'irrelevant'.

Emotional rant? Really? I don't think so. Just a measured reaction to what happened. In any case, I didn't say that driving at 120mph+ is necessarily dangerous, just that it can be in the wrong hands.

[quote=havoc]A car-on-car (or car-on-solid object) accident, at impact speeds in excess of 100mph, will be almost invariably fatal to all occupants. This includes modern cars with airbags and crumple zones. quote]

I agree with you, a friend of mine hit a bus as it was on the wrong side of the road at 50 mph in a very safe car and it nearly cost him his life, if he would've been in a less structuraly safe car he would've definitely died,
Onto the roads for speeding the previous owner of my car maxed it to 160 on a calibrated speedo on the A1 south of Peterboro.

Another example of the down right dangerous driving of our bus drivers.

Could I just mention that yesterday I was pootling along
the A9 in Bavaria, doing a well behaved 110-120 mph in
the middle lane, and this black machine appeared
well back in the fast lane and overtook me
so fast that it was like something out of Star Wars ?

Porsche 911 Turbo at or near full chat. Certainly
in excess of 150 mph. Lovely.

Sadly, he had to slow down for the people carrier
doing about 130 mph or so just ahead.

fast camera free roads?

i am surprised nobody has mentioned the Isle of Man.
we have no speed cameras.
we have no speed limits (out of towns and villages).
no speed humps, no motorways and only 300 metres of dual carriageway.
there is of course, 37 miles of the finest, fastest road racing circuit in the world, on our doorstep (TT Course).

and best of all .... CARAVANS ARE BANNED !

This is going to sound stupid but...
I regularly use the A50 from Stoke to Derby and the Ambulance(EX) loves it, happily sitting at 80 with the slower cars... seen some cars going down there as if it was an autobahn.

you can always try the Isle of Mann. The national speed limit has no limit. so when you see the round white sign with a black stripe you can go as fast as you like. known as G,L,F (go like F**K). you just need look out for crap road surfaces, streams flowing over the roads (normally on a great corner) and sheep.

There are some fantastic roads around Snowdonia National Park. Just don't got there on a weekend or bank holiday. I'm not recommending silly speeds around there either.. too many sheep walking about and walkers wandering all over the place looking at nothing other than their maps!
