If you want to see some really great roads then stray a little further in Bucks. There are some cracking roads on this route;

I'm doing this with some friends this month.

Any suggestions on any rest stops for a egg and bacon butty?

We're not racer boys at all, but do we need to be particularly paranoid about speed traps?

Early along the route, there are some longish stretches of 30 and 40s just north of Dagnall. They often have speed monitoring. But the lions share of the roads are country, where you could really get a move on.

Because the roads go through the sticks, there aren't many food stops I can think of. There is a McDonald as you join the Leighton buzzard by-pass.

Heading north from Hemel Hempstead, beware the sneakily placed Gatso before you reach Water End.
There is one after it as well. First one is in a 50mph limit, the other in a 40.

Brings back memories of riding up the A4146 from Hemel to the VOSA place nr Leighton Buzzard for my Mod 1 in the summer. Been meaning to explore the area a bit more but haven't had the time. T'was a lovely ride there and back when the sun was out.

If you do this route http://goo.gl/maps/5o4I6 then stop when you get to Brill at the pub there, Brill is a cracking village perched on top of some seriously lumpy little hills with great surrounding roads. Really good views too.

So, we did the route and it was a nice little cracker. Some very nice stretches, but they were over too soon. Fact is, for one hour out of London we were doing very well!

I'm going to try and look around to see if I can improve on it.

Ah, my specialist subject has arrived!

Try this: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=Potters+Bar,+H...

The eastern half (Essex border and the A507) is arguably better than the western half.

In a nutshell: B158 from Potters Bar to Hertford, B1004 to Bishops Stortford, B1051 to Thaxted, B184 north for a bit, A507 (the good bit is Baldock to Buntingford...) and then down the B656.

This is twisty country roads the whole way. They are wide enough and sufficiently well sighted for enthusiastic driving, but it's more sports car or hot hatch territory than GT. Police are known to keep an eye on the B184 and the A507, but there's a very good reason - these are probably the best roads in Herts. Watching that final section of the A507 on a sunny evening is like standing on the road to the Nurburgring, you'll lose count of interesting cars and bikes.
Bit of a thread ressurection but just wanted to thank you for pointing this drive out. I finally had the opportunity to try it and they really are great diving roads!
Yes, thanks for posting, I found this thread this morning and then went straight out, great route! smile

Thanks, I drove this route today on an extended test drive of an Alpine A110 and it was great. Strictly speaking I drove this hopefully-faithful reproduction based on your text description and the (slightly mangled in places) route Google Maps now generates for the above link. https://plan.tomtom.com/route/view/e0c73fe6-cfed-4...
