Roads around Lake Garda
Discussion
Being dragged off here for our summer break soon. My usual thing on these trips is find some good roads and rent a car for a day to go play.
Are there any roads of note around the lake? is it going to be worth the effort or is it going to be chock full of dopey tourists and coaches etc?
Thanks for any help

Hi,
Lake Garda is a very special place and well worth to explore.
The mainroad around the lake is extremely busy in summertime.
But still, the section on the westshore between Salo and Riva has to be driven.
The road is just spectacular with many tunnels above the shore.
There is 50km/h restriction on that road, so no high speed fun and quite busy, but worth it for the wonderful views alone.
Quite all the towns and villages around the lake are very nice.
The best are Sirmione, Salo, Limone, Riva and Malcesine.
If you want driving fun you would have to leave the shore and head up the mountains. The road along Lago Valvestino to Lago´d Idro is very nice,
there go up to Cadria for a lovely lunch.
A must do is the very narrow but extremely spectacular road from Lake Garda (South of Limone) up to Pieve/Tremosine (as seen in Skyfall).
Up there have a coffee and icecream on the terrace of Hotel Paradiso.
From there a lovely drive would lead you to the Valle di Bondo.
There are many more nice small and scenic roads around the Lake Garda.
In the east are great routes up the Monte Baldo.
Make sure to get a nice rental car, a convertible would make your day for sure ;-)
Enjoy!

Take the route "Via Panoramica" to this restaurant: "Locanda Monte Baldo, Via San Michele, Malcesine, Verona ", it has a wonderful view over the Lake, it's halve way up the Monto Baldo.
Visit "Hotel Paradiso, Viale Europa 19, Tremosine sul Garda" it has a very scary terrace but with a wonderful view over the Lake. Go to Tremosine by this road "Via Benaco, Tremosine" ,
you will see why. The start of the road is in a Bond movie but it gets better and better.
Or take the SP3 on the other side of the Monto Baldo.
Enjoy your stay.
