Florida - Texas - deep south
Discussion
Anyone driven a similar route?
I only have 5 days or so, but want to stop off where I can in interesting places.
Can anyone recommend anywhere interesting to stay in North Florida, we will stop there on the first night before pushing on towards New Orleans - any recommendations on places to stop on the way?
I'd also like to involve Memphis too if time permits.
Will eventually end up in North Texas.
Has anyone found a driving book on the Deep South? So far the only one I can find is a Michelin road atlas that shows some recommended stops, so have ordered that.
Any suggestions appreciated!

No idea myself but you could always check forums over the pond such as on miata.net and ask the locals. I quickly checked and got this link which may have some good drives on it

You might want to map out a route/locations on google maps first, you might be shocked at how long it will take considering you only have 5 or so days.
6 hours Tallahassee to New Orleans, which is not so bad. New Orleans to Amarillo is 13 hours, which is bad. Realistically six hours a day is about the limit if you want to see things on the way. Cheers guys.
Yes, planned on 4 hours plus per day then a longer final push on the last day.
Family wedding in Texas but the girlfriend and I will be in Florida the week before, so seems like a good excuse for a road trip - enjoy driving so it's not a big deal if we are on the road a lot, we just want to make sure we make the most of what sights and cities we can on the way.

I did 5500 miles starting in Key West and ending in Vegas a few years back. Took two weeks to do it and went a very convoluted route to visit specific places like Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, Santa Fe, Aspen. Longest day was 16 hours driving from Key West to Valdosta in Georgia, never again!
The only bit of Florida I've found worth driving is the overseas highway but that's probably way too far south. You could drive it south from Miami and then fly to Texas from Key West, that's what I'd do.

I lived in North Florida for 6 years. You need to see Destin, FL to Panama City Beach. Both are great places. Take a nice drive down beach road "30A". The top stops are Seaside and Rosemary Beach. I have lived all over the world and this stretch of beach is the most beautiful I have ever seen. You can thank me later!!
Well, I've been to Florida, and as I remember St Augustine was a very nice place. Oldest continuously occupied European Settlement in the USA (according to that bastion of truth, Wikipedia). But you can get cracking food, architecture is very nice. Must be a B&B somewhere! Might be on the wrong coast for you though.
