Time- Plane lands at 0600, so by time son;s FIL gets on the road ( from States , I’d say at least 0800). They are driving to the Midlands, but all the sat navs I've asked say
M4-M25- M1-M6.
Son's FIL is a LA driver , so he's possibly used to jams.
However ,I'd say at 0800 + M25 is going to be car park.Personally, my route would be M4-M25- M40 -A46 - M6-
Any other suggestions?
Route is for driving, but ease of getting there .

M4 to the A404, then the M40. Avoids the 25 completely, and you are going against the flow at that time.

Thanks, I'd no idea how to avoid the M25, but question irrelavent, thankfuly ,as son's inlaws can't hire a car at Heathrow.

NOW I'm intrigued, the M4-A404-M40 was a good call, although I vaguely recall the M4/A404 junction to be congested on occasion in the past, maybe I was there at a bad time.
It's the 'can't hire at Heathrow' that arouses my curiosity, why not?
I find it hard to imagine that there'll be no availability.
Has the American hirer insisted on an automatic, and it can't be guaranteed?
Does he have a medical condition that Rental agencies frown on, hard to believe.
Probably some simple uncomplicated reason that escapes me on a Saturday morning, following a Friday night involving copious amounts of Grey Goose vodka.

Go to a cafe and get some breakfast. Take their time, try after 9?

The main problem on the M4-A404-M40 junction was the A404/M40 junction rather than the M4/A404M. But now a new slip road takes you from the A404 direct to northbound M40 bypassing the horrible Handy Cross roundabout.

Flying overnight then picking up a hire car for a couple of hours drive on an unfamiliar route in a foreign country does sound a bit daunting to me. Change of plan is probably for the best.

You are no doubt correct in your assessment that it was the A404/M40 junction, it was many moons ago that I used that route, thanks.
I'm unsure about your suggested reason for not renting a car after a long overnight flight, I've done it in South Africa and Australia, and no doubt lots of others have too.
Granted, with our foreknowledge that the route in question can be a son-of-a-bh, it would be worth giving it second thought.
Even for a seasoned L.A. driver, driving on the 'wrong' side of the road, among a bunch of M-Way rush hour British nutters would be a tad scary to say the least.
