Drove through this today with no prior knowledge they were there.
My thoughts are they are not yet live .... Reasons
1 the old gatso's are still in place, I know there are guidelines stating both systems can't be in place at the same time.
2 It's a mess, in one stretch of road you have. 40 & 20 mph limits in place, and in the same location 30mph to 40 mph in the opposite direction.
3 In some locations ( in the 20's) the Average Speed Camera signs are hidden by the roadworks and in the 30's by shrubbery.
4) There has been no declaration that they are live, only a prediction, they may be though common sense clearly would be not to abuse the limits.
5) The cameras have to be calibrated and authenticated, since in the restricted speed limit areas this would be impossible as the near side cameras cover only the roadworks which are not a live lane.
6) it would make no sense to turn on the system given the variability of the speed limits, in the ongoing road works. The speed limits would have to change at the point of the set cameras, they don't as afar as I can see. Granted some of the lower limits are entirely in these.

I could be wrong but given the above I feel it's unlikely , however they will be once the roadworks and Gatso's have gone.
Hi Guys

Any news of when the cameras go live?

I drove up and down the A217 yesterday, and I didn't know about the new cameras. It was raining and I was fully concentrated on the road. I was prob doing 46 MPH most of when I could. And prob 30 in the 20 MPH restricted areas. Didnt even notice the new cameras.

Now really worried, I didnt see any notice of the new cameras until coming back, when I saw a tiny sign after the texaco garage saying average speed camera.

Bit worried now!

Gonna be a killer in summer when I move over to night shifts and go up and down the 217 like a yo-yo!!!!!

So far no one has found a definitive start date for these ,so you'll just have to sweat it.

Thanks, yes will just have to wait and see. Will update everyone in a week or 2, if I did or didn't get anything.

I just can't believe they wouldnt put up signage to warn drivers of the changes. Like NEW AVERAGE SPEED CAMERAS INSTALLED. r something on those lines.

I'm being totally honest, if you are concentrating on the road you just don't notice the changes. There are still the old signs up, and in a couple of places (such as after the shell garage) the signs are obscured by trees/leaves.

Also not sure when the calibration will take place, or will they do it in parts?

I’m half tempted to phone Surrey CC and raise hell after driving down there this evening.

All the Gatso speed cameras have now gone but the singage for them remains.

Then got to the 20 road works at the Shell garage and slowed to 22 with someone right up my backside.

Got past that bit of works and saw a works end sign so sped up. Then about 30ft past the junction another 20 roundel so slowed back down as I was unsure of the speed. Just after that 20 sign I noticed a 40 sign still up on one of the lampposts but about 20ft down the road there was a 20 sign. So is it 40 or 20? I thought to be legal they had to remove or cover any signs with the incorrect speed limit. It continued to be 20 down until the Great Tottenham's lights.

Coming up to Romans the signage ended, another works end sign but I stayed at 20 and moved left. People sped past me even though there were more 20 signs spread along.

Sat at 20 again from Romans until the Banstead junction where there was another works end sign and no more extra speed signage. From then on it was business as usual as the idiot who was tailgating me through the 20 bit from Romans was firmly put in his place..

I don’t actually mind the roadworks and the 20 limit because I’ll happily adhere to it BUT i despise the confusing and inconstant signage. I had always assumed works end signs means an end to temporary speed limits also. And both 40 and 20 limit signs with red roundels is a bit dodgy.

Now that the old cameras are gone I’m assuming the average system is all turned on and active and taking no chances. The max I'll go through the average bits where there's 20 sign in place is 22.

So, does anybody know if the Average Speed cameras have been set to register vehicles travelling over 20mph for that part of the roadworks or are they still set at 40mph?

I noticed this morning coming in that just in front of the flashing 20mph sign there is a new sign saying 'CCTV in Operation' which is making me fear the worst - I have been going through that part at a sensible 30mph as 20mph is just ridiculously slow, and causes no end of stress with people driving up your backside and flashing etc.

I wouldn't mind if the guys were working but at the time I go through (just after 6am) there is not a roadworker to be seen!
Hello buddy,

Could you please let me know about this 20 mph average speed limit at road works location. I drove Past this strength and driving at 30 mph. Didn't know about average speed camera

Stick to 19MPH
It will cause so much chaos with tail backs to the M25 that the authorities might actually take notice. It will be broadcast on local radio the traffic chaos, the AA and RAC will get calls and the Police "might" act to lift restrictions.

Better still, get your passenger to get out of the car and walk in front of it with a Red Flag!

For what its worth, I contacted the Council this morning and asked for clarification on what sped I am supposed to be doing,
they are going to look into it and tell me! So it seems even they are not sure at the moment! I also asked about the speed cameras, again the lady in the office could not tell me if they are operating yet rage

Give them a call 03002001003

I decided to call them and ask what the speed limit was. I got the same answer as you but he's logged it with Surrey Roads for them to find an answer for me. He also said he wasn't sure when the average speed cameras were going live but it probably wouldn't be until they'd finished the crossing.

He said they'd had a few calls about the A217 this morning and if a few of us are calling because we're unsure there must be a lot more who won't bother.

They've just called me back.

They said to treat the speed limit as 20 from the roadworks that start just before Reigate Road all the way until the Mad Mile. The utility company has messed up the signage and they've had loads of calls about it already. The Works END signs are all wrong and the 40 sign on the lamp post should have been removed and the 20 limit is enforceable.

She also said to be careful on the Southbound side as although it's posted as a 30, once that signage finishes, it's actually 20 all the way down to Garrats Lane (turning before Romans). If there's an END sign they can't enforce it but apparently it's still 20. - I have no idea either!

She wasn't sure if the Average Speed Cameras are turned on yet because they're run by the Borough Council which is Banstead & Reigate and so any queries about those need to be directed to that council and not Surrey CC.

Here's the Brilliant and helpful email I got from Surrey County council today banghead

"Reference number: ME-422318
Location: BRIGHTON ROAD, BANSTEAD
Details: Streetworks - Street Works enquiry

The current speed limit on the A217 is 40mph and will remain 40mph once the new speed cameras come into effect which is anticipated to be about the end of November.

There are currently reduced limits in effect at the location of the works currently taking place on the highway, once these works have been completed, the speed limit will revert to 40mph.

Once again thank you for contacting us. If you have any further queries or require additional information you may find the following page on our website useful: www.surreycc.gov.uk/highwaysinfo

Rang SCC today to complain about the 20 mph being dangerous due to drivers tailgating and being aggressive, was given advice to phone 101 and take number plate of vehicle which tailgates/flashes/horns........

After not noticing cameras last week and going too fast, not taking a chance now and go 19 mph at the works. But drivers are so aggressive and I worry about someone going into the back of me.

Asked about the cameras being live or not, told that they don't know as not under their control.

Another email:

Dear Mr,

Sorry, I believed that the speed cameras were monitored by the Borough Council.

However, I have just been informed that the average speed cameras on this road do actually belong to SCC and I will forward your enquiry regarding this to the relevant department.

As discussed the speed limit on the Brighton Road is 20 mph North Bound past the works and we will request the works end signs to be removed and the 40 mph signs to be covered.

I have spoken to the engineer behind these works and he has confirmed that the cameras are not yet live. We expect them to go live within the next few weeks, but we don’t yet have a precise date. They will not be activated while there are any temporary speed limits that are not 40 mph. They will only enforce the 40 mph speed limit.

I am ever so sorry for the mixed signage, I have been informed this is due to utility works that are being carried out in the area. The utility has been asked to rectify this.

I sent that to a friend who's also local and he said his mate has already had a ticket. Doubtful but still wouldn't be comfortable doing anything more than 40.

Looks like I moved from Nork just in time! My sympathies, unless going due south I gave up using it years ago to access M25 due to cameras, congestion and generally stty driving.

I'll stick to the A3 when visiting...although I note even that has average cameras at the top now.
