I drove up the A217 from Reigate to Banstead the other evening, it really is now the most frustrating dreary road to be on (especially when its empty). I spent most of my time constantly trying to attain 39mph then when I got to Burgh Heath slowed to 19mph frown
Really irate motorists behind me,
I expect this to be a massive cash making machine when it goes live. (if its not already).
I used to commute on it every day. Its a fking horrible road. You are right its so dreary and just seems to go on forever.

Hate it.

It really is a pain in the backside. Every time I visit my parents I join the A217 and have to go straight into the 20mph northbound zone (when leaving theirs). Yet to see any work done but then it is evenings I suppose.

Also had some Scenic on my rear bumper southbound as I sat at 40mph who then decided to undertake a bunch of people. Shame they weren't on for him!!

So I drove to work this morning and on the Southbound stretch going past Romans they have now made that part 20mph as well - great. What's stupid is that the 40mph speed signs are still visible and one of the temporary 20mph speed signs is on the kerb where it's obscured by parked cars - why?! What's the point of a sign you can't see properly? It's like putting on a firework display for Stevie Wonder.

So, how is this going to work when the average speed cameras go live this Monday? Will they be set for 40mph, or will they be adjusted to reflect the changes in speed limit? Earlier in this thread it was suggested that the council would not turn them on until the work was done and personally I feel that makes much more sense, but it seems as if the council do not have the same view *sigh*

Some of the pipe work is almost completed nearest me at the southbound section near Chipstead road junction

and road resurfaced ,so hopefully some cones and fencing might be removed by Christmas ?

The speed signs are so confusing, a mixture of 20, 30 & 40mph and in places showing combinations of the aforementioned.

Cars doing different speeds and overtaking on the dual carriageway sections. Surrey CC must be rubbing their hands in glee.

Until the work is done, I'm going to use an alternative route. I'm now going through Chipstead, which isn't much faster, but I least I don't have the faff of trying to stick to 20, plus some of the roads around there are quite fun to drive around...

As the Title: New Average speed cameras are being rolled out on the A217 Northbound from Reigate Roundabout to Sutton, Also Speed Limits in sections have been reduced!

It used to be from Reigate Roundabout to Lower Kingswood the Dual carriageway was National Speed limit. this has now been reduced to 40MPH The New Average cameras are bolted one on top of each other covering both lanes to existing Lamp posts!
The first one is as you go around the left corner after Reigate roundabout, slightly hidden from view by the tree canopy. The second camera is just after the Lower Kingswood roundabout by the Mogador turning and so it continues all the way past Tadworth roundabout, Burgh Heath, past Romans International to Sutton.

Getting more and more like "1984" each day frown
Average speed cameras. The only device that slows serial speeders down. They are totally automatic with no human input. The first that you know is a ticket landing on your mat. More steadily appearing on a road near you. Can only be a good thing.

Do you actually own a car? Do YOU ever drive anywhere? I would put money on it that you have done over 30 in a 30 limit or 20 in a 20 limit.

Anyway, Last night I turned Left onto the 217 from Reigate road, Lots of open dual carriageway, all 40mph signs covered over and only 20mph signs posted.
I sat at 19mph in my Van and Every single car and Lorry over and undertook me. Including a Police 4x4!

The road really is a bloody joke

Not sure why you bother being on this forum with views like that, your blood pressure must be sky high.

If limits are appropriate and necessary maybe average speed enforcement has a place but there are increasingly stupid limits which benefit nobody.

This bit of road and a lot similar surrounding it is 40 mph limited, sensible? https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.0575267,0.018504...

Does anyone actually 'do' 40mph there ? That's nearly as dumb as the A4069 - although I hear most people ignore that one too. GOOD!

In response to the above posts:

I live in the middle of the middle of nowhere, I drive everywhere.

Yes of course I have exceeded the speed limits, right across the board, but it is rare and usually has a very good reason behind it. It is not my default position.

My blood pressure, thankfully, has always been at the lower end of the band for my age. (old geezer).

On a general point, there are many PHers who observe speed limits and are not reluctant to say so in their posts

And as this is a primarily a motoring website there is no earthly reason why posters cannot comment on speed and the often reckless use of same.

Drove down from M25 to Banstead at lunchtime today. Although I don't think the cameras and limit are ideal you can only laugh at the absolutely blind people that drive down this road.

First of all some bloke in a Ranger royally cut me up going from M23 to M25 on the left hand slip road. I caught up with him at the M25 J8 traffic lights and followed him round the roundabout to the A217 towards Banstead. Soon as we passed the first camera with the sign on the lamp post and the big LED board saying cameras active. He was straight into L2 tailgating people and flashing them to move out the way. I lost sight of him speeding up the hill towards Tadworth. My wife was humorously egging him to collect his points...

Nice that all the roadworks have been cleaned up in both directions though. Not 100% sure whats going on with the new crossing as they've reduced the width of L1 going Southbound with new kerbstones, IMO thats asking for trouble.

If there are any road designers out there? Please can you explain the logic in making the road smaller when Car transporter lorries and fuel tankers and many other lorries use this stretch of road?

Is it a case of wanting all traffic in the inside lane to filter onto 1 lane? What is the reasoning behind it?

Get ready for a serious amount of accidents frown

So it's 2 weeks since December 18th when the cameras supposedly went live.

Has anyone heard from anyone who got a NIP yet?

There's plenty of drivers ignoring or ignorant of the new measures so someone must be getting something in post.
Cones and single lane are back out for the pedestrian crossing work today.
