Well it’s been a while but I’m back up next week for a run. Not taking any of my own cars though will be hiring.
Of course will pass through sheik said though this time going to stay up in lochinver and over to uist! Cannot wait to get to the quieter end of the country !
When in Lochinver make sure you take a walk/drive up the Canisp road (next the the road to Inverlodge Hotel). It's fab up there and many miss it.Of course will pass through sheik said though this time going to stay up in lochinver and over to uist! Cannot wait to get to the quieter end of the country !

Thanks gents, that's most appreciated. I will adjust our plans to take in some of those roads to get off the beaten track.
Just one other question, is the ferry from Mallaig to Skye pretty reliable? I appreciate if it's blowing a gale then we should avoid but I don't want to head from Fort William to Mallaig to then learn that ferries not running and then we have to make our way back..
I've read that it's a great drive to Mallaig but then so is Fort William to Skye via Fort Augustus. Any thoughts most appreciated.
The A830 is a good drive, but you might want to look at the sections of the B8008 ( the old road we drove for yonks) , fro example- try comng off the A830 signed as a right turn at B8008 Glasncardoch and take the old road into Mallaig to get a flavour of th old road we drove for years. As for the ferry- there is a sign just over the Lochy bridge ( opposite Lochaber High School) giving the state of sailings. But beware of the nasty cambers on what we called the "new road"( Glenfinnan - Lochailort)- aftr 50 years it's getting past it's sell by date.
