One Day Driving Distance?
Discussion
Hi. As mentioned a couple weeks ago I did the Yeovil to Münster trip and came back yesterday. All in all it was a smooth and easy drive and driving on the right wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be.
I took a slightly different route from Antwerp where I went NE to Arnhem and across, rather than east towards Duisburg on the way there (although I did go that way on the way back) to mix it up a bit with some single lane roads and was only 15 miles longer.
Here is a pic of the trip information when I first arrived.
For those that can't be bothered to do the maths (like me) I switched it back to normal and took another pic.
The car was a Citroen C2 Code, basically a VTS, incase you were wondering.

Hi, I made a timelapse of the trip mentioned above using an old gopro stuck to the dash (well, from Calais onwards actually). Just over 5.5hrs condensed into 16 mins. I forgot to turn it on a couple times after stopping and the batteries died on the outskirts of Münster (doh!) but 99% of the route from Calais is there. I didn't film any of the 200 miles here in England as it was dark. The sun came up during the ferry crossing. Not only was it my first time driving on the right, but the first time I've made any sort of video like this so please excuse quality.

That's such an excellent video,
well edited and with a really engaging soundtrack, thanks. I must say, it's a pleasure (and relaxing) to watch someone with good lane discipline -- I would've been triggered, otherwise!
It's amusing to see the cars flying past once you hit the autobahnen.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I try to be considerate of others while driving and in this case was also in no real rush and enjoyed taking in the whole experience. The music from the video is called Doctor Momentum from Slync, who has a bunch of copyright free music on youtube. I heard it originally on another timelapse once from a guy that drives around/across the US. Cheers! well edited and with a really engaging soundtrack, thanks. The longest single day I've had of driving was leaving Kent at 3AM heading to Newcastle. Spending an entire day there getting work done on the car and getting back to Kent at 9PM. It was worth it though as I drove up with <500hp and drove home with >600hp. That was just shy of 700 miles.
I've done the journey a few more times now but always do an over nighter as its too much considering a hotel costs £50 or so!

Longest trips in one day:
UK: Wiltshire - Isle of Mull - 540 miles + ferry
Europe: Windsor - Megeve in France - 700 miles + tunnel
Australia: Flinders (SA) to Dubbo (NSW) - 1200km / 750 miles
USA: Spokane (WA) to Durango (CO) - an 18 hour 1150 mile nightmare: unexpectedly needed to be in Durango the next day.
Africa: Namib desert - 250 miles all off road in an indestructible Hilux.
Done in a car with two drivers, swapping roughly every 2 hours. I've done the Isle of Mull one by myself too.

i was doing rotterdam to lausanne and back once a month over summer, just short of 800km each way. preferred to set off on the leg down around dusk, but come back north setting off at midnight.
vienna to lausanne this xmas, think thats closer to 1100km. blessed with a passenger who loves road trips on these, they aren't that bad tbh.
but by far the worst, about 800km across guinea in a single sitting, from up nearish the mali border to conakry. i was told it was a 2 day trip with an overnight stop. fk that, set off at 2am with a hilux and driver and by 7am we were halfway there. brilliant i thought, but then the next 400km took 13hours. the roads were so bad that they dictated the average speed and it was just awful, my insides were like soup at the end.

Two long journeys stick in my mind, only stopping for fuel, pee or crossing the channel.
Dijon-Prenois to Yorkshire: 675 miles on a Ducati 748 with a backpack, after a trackday. I had to stretch out on my back on the ferry crossing as I was almost crippled. Never again.
Spa to Yorkshire: 550 miles in a track-prepped Lotus Elise with no clutch. Got pretty good at clutchless changes and using the starter motor to move the car in first. Pushing the car at the customs post on the French side of the tunnel was no fun.

Beckenham, SE London to just north of Scourie, Sutherland. Single driver, done about twice a year. Leave at 5am and beat all traffic - arrive around 8pm. I generally try to make it to the Scottish border before I have to stop for a break.
664 miles each way.
It always feels much further on the return leg!

This is small fry compared to some of the mileage covered here but was personally my longest run: Newcastle to Heathrow (290 ish miles) covered in 4hr 15 minutes with a 7 minute toilet break in between. My car could have gone on forever but my back was doing me in by the time I had reached Northampton on the M1!

That's an unexpectedly good point -- the thread is about a single driver, in the main. Interesting journeys, nevertheless and would like to hear more about them, particularly outside of Europe.
The Isle of Mull journey must've started to become tiring North of Glasgow!
The Mull journey gets fun North of Glasgow (or in fact west of Stirling) - or at least it did before the average speed cameras were put in…The Isle of Mull journey must've started to become tiring North of Glasgow!
I’ve done it so many times, that I probably could do most of it in my sleep!
