Glasgow to Banff

I'm going there very shortly but a bit miffed at directions, Google maps say up through Perth M90 the near Stonehaven onto M96 and up through some other places to Banff.
But talking to a mate yesterday who's an ex hgv driver said to take the A9 up as it's shorter but you'll go through more small places ect. I'm awry incase I got lost going that way at least if I stick to the main Google map route outta main roads..... Any opinions from others that have did it?

Pretty sure the A9 isn't shorter. I'd go right up the east coast.

Google says via A9 207 miles, 4:09, via A90 189 miles, 3:33.

No contest.

However I was in Pennan a few weeks ago and did the A9 and Braemar then cross country. Lovely drive and will be quiet this time of year.

I'd leave Glasgow on the M8, leave the car at the long-stay then hop on an Air Transat flight to Toronto, from where you can get in internal flight to Calgary, its then about 90 minutes on Highway 1 to the centre of Banff

I'd avoid the A9 with all the road works north of Perth. Last I heard they are running convoys through the bigger sections and this adds a good bit of time onto any journey.
Up the east coast is probably the best option staying on reasonably good roads.

avoid the A9 like the plague, it' a soulless road of misery.

Glasgow - perth - Dundee (don't stop whatever you do) - turn off A90 onto the AWPR at stonehaven and either turn off at Aberdeen airport, take A96 to Inverurie, then head up through Oldmeldrum / turriff. OR keep on the AWPR and go Ellon - Peterheid and over.

I'd go A96 myself and up via meldy.

No idea if the OP is Scottish but this sums up my impression of all the people of Scotland.
