car club trip to yorkshire - where to go, what to see?

Here’s a slightly different route, which some might prefer, knocks out the Otley/Ilkley section which is replaced by Pateley Bridge and Grassington.

Has as already been mentioned, an early start is recommended for the best driving experience. In the spring and summer there’s nothing I like more than hitting these roads at 5/6am, they are an utter joy and there’s no place I’d rather be.

BTW I mentioned in another sub forum that I have written a guide to driving the route of the old A1 / Gt North Road along 65 miles between Ferrybridge and north of Scotch Corner which is respite from the tedium of the A1M and which also gives an insight into driving north in times past. It's an ideal route for classics especially .

If you get up to Stanhope, there is a good run over the tops to Middleton in teesdale, up to Alston, then to Hexham and finally back to Stanhope, some tight bends and good hills,
This was my route most weekends last year whilst running my engine in. The run from Haydon bridge down to melmerby is my absolute favourite. The run from Stanhope to MiT is pretty amazing too.Whilst you're in Yorkshire it would be rude not to do Buttertubs pass from Hawes to Thwaite, then continue north to the highest pub in the Uk (Tan Hill) for a stop, then either continue further north to pick up Hartside pass and have a play in the pennines or return back down.
