Melmerby to Hartside on the A686. That direction is up hill so you can really lean on a car on the exits and far less abusive on brakes. Suits a lighter car best. Heavy cars tend to really show their weight on that stretch.
I would have to agree - I took my Lotus over there yesterday (the old cafe site at the top was rammed)even though I must have driven it over 50 times I have still yet to get it completely 'right'. Linking it through to Haydon Bridge makes it an epic drive, surely the best stretch of tarmac in England?

That whole weardale, Teesdale, Cumbrian border area is full of fantastic roads. They are a everywhere. I also love the stretch up from high force falls toward Alston and the section of the B6278 south of Stanhope. It's the lack of traffic that probably helps most. There's some nice roads in and around the northumberland national park and into the borders too. The lakes, north yorkshire and peak district have some really nice roads too but attract far more traffic generally so less appealing to me.

This section of the A66 heading West next to Bass Lake. This view was before all the safety measures were put in place, much safer but now just dull!

If you do Melmerby to Hartside I recommend going onto Alston then the A689 north towards Brampton, more good roads and only very small sections of 30 limit
Yeah it's pretty good though I've only driven it at night so far. Although staying on the A686 isn't too shabby either. Or head south east out of Alston down towards Middleton on the B6277. The first stretch of that road is absolutely sublime. Many seem to like the road east toward Stanhope but I'm not such a big fan. Poor surface and most of it isn't that interesting. It's funny I bet I'm not the only one that sometimes waits in Melberby for a gap in the traffic before going up to Hartisde. There's really only one overtaking point as soon as you leave Melberby and then you're stuck. I don't go berserk on public roads but you do catch people very quickly on that tight section so I like to have a bit of space.

Zig Zag Hill, North Dorset. Perhaps not my favourite but it's definitely up there. I tend to drive it most days.

Nah, it's too tight/slow and although I haven't been for a year or so, the road surface was always terrible!https://www.google.com/maps/@50.9870558,-2.1554483...

Then some great views from the sweeping roads when you get to the top

Don't go down towards Stanhope, you go past my house and pooch isn't keen on the noise from V8s

I think it was always 'safe', all it took were a few who took too many liberties for some to then make complaints, and the Highways Agency (as they were back then) felt they had to "improve it".https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@54.649947,-3.221303...

Done this quite a few times in the past.Great in a RWD car but also a road becoming ever more ruined by high friction surfacing.Shame about the cafe at the top. Do you know if there are plans to rebuild it? Re-open it as a cafe?

Excellent opportunities for photo ops as well.

On a motorbike, I like the series of sweeping bends between Garve and the Glascarnoch Dam between Inverness and Ullapool, on the A835.
The road is usually empty and you can set each corner up perfectly, with great sightlines.
You can maintain a decent speed and the views are spectacular.

70-80 deg bend right, hump bridge, 70-80 deg bend left, if you don't want to click the link.
Driven it most days since 2002 and it still makes me giggle and think of Scalextric.

I remember those very bends being fun in a Seven - thankfully I don't think this is on the NC 500, so less chance of one;s day being ruined by fat Germans on Harleys or convoys of supercars whose owners are apparently too frightened to go out on their own .
