Trip from Cambridge to Edinburgh

My brother and i are heading off for a road trip and holiday up in edinburgh over the summer and i was wondering if anyone knew which would be the best route? I've heard the A697 is a great one, as is the a7 but if anyone can think of a better route or simply tell me the route they take it would be amazing.
P.s does anyone remember the issue of "evo" which had their favourite roads, i cant seem to find it!

Go up the M/A74 and cut off for Moffat. From there take the A708 to Selkirk. Be careful and it is a wonderful drive with great lunch opportunities at either end or by St Mary's loch in the middle. The drive from Selkirk to Edinburgh is also nice though too many scameras for my tastes.
