A57 Snake Pass was shut today between Glossop & Ladybower Reservoir.
Knew about this in advance but does anyone know why?
There were four set of temporary traffic lights there for a few days last week and I have a horrible feeling that at least three of them are for scameras.....and 'Slow Down' warning flashers appeared near the summit a couple of months back.

The first set was about a mile past the Snake Inn on the Sheffield side, but they have been there before a few months back and may be to do with wall repairs. The second and third sets were next to the reservoir, one on the straight bit and one about 1/4 mile further back near one of the farm turnings (not Hagg Hostel).

The last one was up beyond LadyBower Inn, between Cutthroat bridge and the turnoff for Strines. I do hope I'm wrong because this is one that is very popular with PHer's and now it looks like the Scamera partnership want to get their grubby little mitts on it.....

Hope i'm wrong.

Be warned.

Heard this morning it will be shut until 22 July "at the earliest".
And the reason given was for road resurfacing. I somehow don't believe them because there are some truly bad bits that do need resurfacing that weren't where the traffic lights are. And the lights were at bits in the road that actually aren't that bad....certainly not in need of resurfacing. The traffic light sites were less than 30 yards...bearly worth resurfacing but perhaps just long enough for a gatso and some white lines.....

Paranoid? Moi? As above...hope I'm wrong.

Looks like Woodhead and the convoy of HGVS and caravan-pulling numpties for the next week or so then....

If they put cameras on the Snake I think I'll cry. Such a wonderful road and it's only about 25 minutes away from my house!

It'll be the usual story - resurface the road, make it smoother and safer than ever before...

... then give it one of those ridiculously pointless blanket 50mph speed limits. For added effect, post derestriction signs on the single track lanes which junction with the nice new road.

Spotted a headline that cameras are going up between Rivelin and the reservoir.

Best alternative route...no traffic....great roads

Hope Valley > Winnats > Rushup Edge > Chapel > Whaley Bridge > Macclesfield road > Pott Shrigley > Adlington > straight on past Adlington Hall > Dean Row > Handforth > Stanneylands Hotel > Styal > Manchester airport > M56 > Manchester.

The bit about a camera between the reservoir and Rivelin certainly makes seems to add up....it's where the temporary lights were - on the bend near the layby between Cutthroat bridge and the Strines road. And one of those grey boxes that always seems to accompany a gatso has appeared here as well....

To all regular & occasional Snake users...I will be using this again almost as soon as it opens (live in East Manchester, work near Hillsborough), so I'll keep you posted as to how many cameras there are, where they are and what ridiculous speed limits they have imposed. I'm not expecting any re-surfacing though.....

Thanks be to the robbing bds (sorry, I really meant our 'safety conscious' chums of course).....

I'm sure those Gatsos will be too close to the road, and 'someone' with a lorry might be forced to accidently drive too close and accidently hit one!

I wouldn't jump to conclusions about cameras -

www.sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/road-works/general-roadworks

This - .pdf - is also useful information.

I don't think a speed camera will last very long on Snake Pass!

Maybe not at the moment, but the Star recently carried a story about camera(s) proposed between Rivelin and the reservoir.

I didn't read the report, but will update if I can find it.

The only bit I saw was something like after much campaigning, speed cameras at last agreed for.....

More pointless pressure from the brainwashed brigade....

Well, it's open again and it seems that I have possibly done them a diservice - quite a bit of resurfacing has gone on and some of the nastier potholes have been filled in.

No evidence of any speed cameras either so enjoy it while the sun is shining. One word of warning...as always when resurfacing has took place there is currently an excess of stonechips around so those PHr's who like their P&J chip free may want to avoid it for a week or so....

No strange little laybys on the overtaking straights?

No, nothing like that sir. There ARE some of those 'white square paint blocks' near the reservoir, but I seem to remember they are for the benefit of police helicopter aerial pursuit teams(?)...

The only thing in one of the laybys is a HUGE pile of stonechips which they haven't got round to shifting yet.

Otherwise, business as usual.

Beware re surfacing if they've used this new stuff.

The surface has to bed in for 18 months, during which time it is VERY dangerous....slippy even in the dry.....

That road sounds nice, any chance of a little map, with it highlighted?

Another word of warning...there are some 30 MPH limit signs up....but no definetly cameras. Quite why they are they there I have no idea, but they cover about 2 miles including the overtaking straight down the hill(past the temporary traffic lights). I can only think they were leftovers from when the resurfacing took place and there was some limited access (my boss's son stayed at Lockerbrook Hostel/Farm (?) while the resurfacing was taking place). Everyone seems to be ignoring them and I can only think that they haven't got round or can't be bothered to take them down....unless they really do have plans to put some gatsos there in the future..... ....stay safe out there.
