Exactly the same story with a rather less exciting road - the A617. Recently resurfaced, wide, well sighted, gentle bends, 50 mph limit along the whole thing. It beggars belief. It seems we'll just have to accept that we are a hated breed of people, and that people who can't see past their headlights but drive slowly are safer than us.

Grrr.

They can't get mobile phone masts past the environMentalists....

There's no way they'll agree to install Specs.

Another word of warning...there are some 30 MPH limit signs up....but no definetly cameras. Quite why they are they there I have no idea, but they cover about 2 miles including the overtaking straight down the hill(past the temporary traffic lights). I can only think they were leftovers from when the resurfacing took place and there was some limited access (my boss's son stayed at Lockerbrook Hostel/Farm (?) while the resurfacing was taking place). Everyone seems to be ignoring them and I can only think that they haven't got round or can't be bothered to take them down....unless they really do have plans to put some gatsos there in the future..... rolleyes....stay safe out there.

Totally unenforceable. From Sheffield side 'entry' to the '30' zone only has one roundel on left - would need roundel both sides of road to be enforceable, there is no system of street lighting and therefore repeaters would be required, there are none. '30 zone' has no nsl exit markers (or indeed exit markers of any kind). It's nonsense, continue to ignore it.

But that's just a Vectra in a frock, isn't it?

Coat/me/door interaction underway.

I noticed these 30mph signs, completely ignored them! Like the previous poster said, there are no NSL signs on the other side, completely random. Been driving it at least once a month for the last 20 years. Great road when the traffic is light, very annoying when heavy. Best at night or very early morning.

Like pretty much every other road in the country then - get up before the dawdlers and you can drive in your own comfort zone.

Last Fridays Sheffield Telegraph has a big article on the A57 / Snake Pass. Sounds like Sheffield City Council is going to team up with Derbyshire Council with a view to 'putting speed cameras accross the whole Snake down the A57 to Crosspool'?

Could just be a bit of journalistic license but they did quote the rozzers on it. Anyone else got any info on this? The article seemed to imply fixed and mobile cameras.

Might have to squeeze in some runs before they finish it off...

I reckon the Green Goblins will shout down Specs on sticks, and linking cameras with cables would be a major task on the Snake.

So I reckon it's a non starter.

If not, we'll just have to stop before the next camera to get the average down, then make progress again.

If they use these new, cheap white tube average speed cameras up there (are they linked by radio?), I can see them getting taken out by shotguns.

Ladybower to Crosspool might be a different matter, but it's not a very interesting stretch, so I'm not too fussed. It'll be good to see the wittering residents getting caught by the cameras, though...

Comments from the police officer in the Star about 90 being unbelievable, or something, is very, very annoying. As an advanced plod, he knows very well it isn't.

Now, where are my Tony Blair cloned number plates?

Sorry to drag this one up again folks but I bring sad tidings.....

A blanket 50mph limit has been put on the Snake running from just past the Strines turnoff all the way to Glossop. This will be "enforced from 29th Jan 2007" according to the signs (which also seem to indicate that a scamera or two might not be too far down the line). Anyone fancing a quick blast for old times sake had better get their skates on....

That could be my Sunday afternoon sorted! Real shame to see another great driver's road succumb to our bent-statistics-based government.

Just been doing some photos and filming along there today with the SMACS (www.scoobysmacs.co.uk) and was also very very sad to see the 50mph signs all along. Why it's been reduced to a 50 I'll never know, as I wasn't aware of any bad blackspots or accidents on this stretch. A very sad state of affairs indeed.

Can't see them enforcing it.

Only ever seen a scamera van at the end of the reservoir. I hear they placed one in the layby a bit further on towards Glossop, but I never saw it.

There have been VASCAR squares painted on the road for a long time, and they use unmarked cars but the only one I've ever seen was on telly when they pulled a biker for 90. Watching that footage made it glaringly obvious 90 isn't dangerous on some bits.

Let's see how they apportion blame for the forthcoming increase in head on collisions as overtaking consumes greater distances.

I live right close to the Sheffield end of Snake and saw the 50 limit signs up a couple of weeks ago. I was initially very disappointed but in hindsight I think it might improve things for the spirited driver. Only if they don't install cameras though.

If everyone sticks to 50mph then it will make them easier to overtake and should allow one to get past more cars in one hit and potentially mean a clearer journey.

Obviously, if static cameras go up then you can learn their positions and drive accordingly but I am worried about the temporary cameras. I've never worried about them before but it seems that 50 limit roads tend to be enforced more stringently.

I really hope not though as it would remove the fun from a great piece of road.

Ah...I see, thanks.

Mobiles sit in the layby at the end of the reservoir.

They'll pick you off as you crest the brow heading towards Glossop.

Others have been seen (not by me) a bit further on, in the lay by in the trees near the cycle crossing place.

There are vascar squares painted on the road in a couple of places and plod uses unmarked cars.
