If everyone sticks to 50mph then it will make them easier to overtake and should allow one to get past more cars in one hit and potentially mean a clearer journey.
Shouldn't that read "If everyone ELSE sticks to 50mph then it will make them easier to overtake..........

If everyone does that, the twots will be nose to tail and impossible to pass in all but a couple of places.

It was bad enough at 60.

Using the Snake regularly as I do, I can quite honestly say that making progress has got harder since these restrictions were introduced.

Previously, I found it comfortable to do about 60 on most of this road, speeding up as necessary to overtake the plodding ocassional numpty on the straight bits - safe & steady,no problem - even in my unexciting but steady Vauxhall Astra 1600.

The major problem at this point appeared to be twofold:
1) The usual numpties who did 30-35mph regardless.
2) A very, very small minority of dickheads who were probably solely responsible for the accident rates on that road. Not so much from speeding, but where they chose to do it - they do not give that road the respect it deserves. I would bet that this has in turn led to these limits being imposed. I have witnessed several near misses and at least one accident due to nobs like this. This particular tool managed to close the Snake for almost an entire morning and I had seen him have several near misses before, mainly through crap overtaking (and if you are reading this Mr Moustachieod Plonker from Stalybridge with the now written-off Laguna, I can understand you wanting to overtake some plodder doing 30mph, but you picked the wrong fcensoredg place to do it!! Overtaking in a series of s-bends is not a good idea - even more so when there is the overtaking straight down the hill to Lockerbrook only a minute away!!) banghead

Since the restrictions came in, the problem is that the number of numpties appears to have quadrupled and the majority of them all seem to suffer from the same form of dyslexia - the limit says 50, but yes - you've guessed it - they all seem to think it says 30. grumpy
Anyone who has been on the Snake recently on a Sunday will know what I mean.

Nowadays, I stick to around 50-55mph, and in some places it is even possible to get past a solitary numpty without breaking 45(!), but if you find yourself behind a convoy of about six or more of them you can forget it.

There was no need to piddle around with limit - it was fine as it was, but as usual the plodders & pillocks have to spoil it for all of us.

A sad state of affairs for a once great bit of road. cry

NB: As MBH says elsewhere, plod has been spotted lurking in the layby just past the resevoir bridge with his speed gun. This seems to be the favourite vantage point for the patrol cars, but Motorcycle Plod has also been spotted (with camera) in some of the smaller parking/pull in spaces, ranging from the cycle paths near Lockerbrook, to all the way up to the summit...stay points free out there....

Cripes....is the bike plod on an unmarked bike?

The van I meant wasn't near the bridge, it was at the end of the long straight where the reservoir dwindles out...

I spent 3 years making up to 4 trips a week over there. It was possible to do huge speeds with no traffic. Having fitted a pair of long range Turini Apollo and a pair of Cibie Virage wide angles, it was possible to drive faster in the dark....

A common cause of accidents was a competent driver staring an overtake of 2+ vehicles, and one ahead of him pulling out in his path. I saw one nearly dive through a wall and my son witnessed another that didn't get away with it.

The two plods that I saw on bikes were not unmarked, they were actual traffic cops with the proper gear - relatively easy to spot due to the fluoresecent hi-vis jackets they wear. One was in a (very small) pull-in between the layby just over the bridge and the overtaking straight next to reservoir. The other was further up in a similar pull-in, roughly halfway between the Snake Inn & the summit. Others have been spotted at various other points. We are obviously aware that they ocassionally use unmarked cars, but I have never heard of unmarked bikes being used. If they have started to use them like this.....oh dear!!! irked

It's S Yorks from Crosspool to the reservoirs, Derbyshire beyond.

Just wondering about marked/unmarked bikes, ben expecting unmarked ones for ages. Saw one in North Wales, plod with a black helmet and no identifying marks, except small blue strobes on the front.

Were they using a gun on the Snake?

At least one of the bike plods that has been spotted (not by me) apparently appeared to have a 'hand-held' device, and I have seen one patrol car plod in the layby near the bridge using one of those tripod mounted jobbies.

Interestingly, I have spotted cop and some of his various mobile cameras several months before the restrictions went up at the end of January (usually in that layby). Perhaps they knew back then what was in the pipeline and were 'having a dry run' and 'honing their skills' so to speak, inreadiness for the end of the following January....all in the name of 'safety' of course......

During those three years I travelled regularly, I think I only saw plod a couple of times.

If they'd had the resources to police the road, they would have done so. This was one of their arguments for opposing the 40 limit over Burbage.

If they're going for it now, what area of policing has 'lost' resources to compensate...?

its been ruined as everyone says, 50mph through out. I did the snake pass/hathersage/castleton loop every day over easter and everyday the scamera van was there! in the layby on the left as you crest over the straight at the end of the reservoir (towards glossop). on one of the days there was also a blue and white in the layby on the right just before the summit (again towards glossop).

All in all i am well gutted that this bullshit limit is being so aggressively enforced, I went to sheffield for uni, so for 4 years (only ever saw 3 police cars on there!) I was doing the pass at least twice a week, and it was a joy everytime. i have so much love for this rd, but its been somewhat ruined by all the numpties driving slowly and the plod for enforcing a bullshit limit.

Went over to my parents over the Easter weekend (Sheffield to Warrington) and saw the mobile van at the end of the long straight just as I was about to overtake 5/6 slow moving (50mph!)cars.
And its on one of the few places the wife will allow me to overtake when I'm driving the bus with the kids onboard. Dam! Had to sit behind at 50 all the way to Glossop as the other allowable overtaking spots were blocked by oncoming traffic (long straight uphill after some twisties with farm half way along, straight after Snake Pass Inn and long sweeping left hander on decent).
Have to fabricate a trip on my own so I can go in the Golf.

As a Sheffielder travelling regularly to Man airport this road has been ruined by the 50mph limit. It is also being ruined by the increasing number of hgvs that use it. I would love to see HGVs banned from it. Not only are they slow and environmentally unfriendly but they are also ruining the surfaces. HGVs should use the Woodhead or the motorway.

The Snake is a great road albeit a short one. The alternative route to Manchester someone suggested is a great drive but doesn't flow like the Snake.

If you're travelling from the west of Sheffield, the Pott Shrigley route is a good 'un.

With no traffic, I can do it from Ecclesall in 40 minutes in a Mondy TDci...yee haaa

Mobiles have been seen in the layby there, on the left heading towards Glossop.

Early am, you say...? Didn't know they had night kit, and wonder why they would be there at that time when they're cutting operational time by 15%.

Most odd...could it be a pair of twaankers with flash guns taking the piss? These rambler types are a bit odd at times...

55 you say...? Not trying, that bit's good for the 80s in places...smile

Let us know if you get a letter...good luck.

Still not quite sure which bit you two are on about? Do you mean the around the bottom of the mountian, just before the resoviors, (Sheffield side)?

80 you say...? Your not trying. That bits good for 120+ in places... smile
I guess that'll be the straight with the slightly hidden lay-by before a medium speed right hander, then a straight, then left hander, straight then lay-by (I think)... at the bottom of the Derwent Valley past the Bamford junction.

Anyway, the in-field section is so bumpy (in my poorly damped A3) that I have no choice but to lift (there is no traction as the car just constantly skips) and do the business under braking and hit the throttle as the exits open up.

The last 2 nights, blatting to work along the m60 past the m57 turn off, I've seen the flashing signs on the m-way saying the snake is closed. Does anyone know what's going on?

The snake is now just like the rest of Derbyshire, 50mph and shite. All you small businesses wondering why your takings are down this summer look no further than your traffic Gestapo. I for one refuse to drive in the county. Eventually the only place worth going to will be bleeding France, cant believe I just said that driving
