Ive just recently moved up to leeds for uni and am in desperate need of some fun/challenging roads to drive in the local area.
If any of you guys have some ideas itd be great to hear them because city driving is making me crazy!
Thanks guys

Snap!!
Just moved to leeds myself actually, and sick of city driving aswell!
Went for a nice drive this afternoon, out to harrogate, then out on the dales, found a cracking road aswell, the B6165 between Pateley Bridge and Grassington. Good surface, not much traffic and good visibility, happy days!

Other than that, im open to suggestions.

What you driving anyway?

Hey mate, thanks for that ill check it out when i get a chance.
I drive a Peugeot 405 1.9TDi! not a PH car by any stretch of the imagination
but a pretty good car to learn in.
Although the brakes are shockingly prone to brake fade!
Cant wait to get back out on some twisty stuff, thanks again.

Bloody hell, you are in Yorkshire and you ask this question? Just get in the car and head North. North Yorks is a driving paradise.

Hop on the A64, drive East past the A1. Keep going for however long you want, pick any random turnoff and go where the wheels take you

Good choice. Get to Otley, then head North to Blubberhouses, then head North to Greenhow, then East or West to Grassington or Pately Bridge! It's only a 20 min drive from Leeds centre (early morning weekend) and your right into some decent roads!

Nice choice of car too, had one myself, though it had Mi16 bits and the fuel pump was tweaked to offer ~ 110bhp, along with some nice Toyo T1-S... Those roads were my commute run for about a year (lived out that way since childhood) and even in a humble 405 they are thoroughly enjoyable!
Think my brother still has his 405 Mi16 rear axle and front brakes, which adds stiffer rear end, discs at the rear and bigger front brakes (think the stock Tdi might have Mi16 front ones, not sure...) if your interested in any cheap bits then I can ask. They make a big difference to the handling.

I meet up with a few people now and again and we go for a drive up over the foot of the dales, will get in touch next time we are out and if you'd like to join us you can come along! Can tweak up that fuel pump for you if you haven't already

Personally I found that the 405 was a damn good driving car for what it was. On the boggo 14" rims and random tyres that I bought it with it was a tad naff, but when I got some 306 Gti6 alloys (light) and T1-S tyres on it, and tweaked up the fuel pump and stuff, it was much better... one was on 140k and eating up the miles (was written off after someone crashed into me), and the second one was on 180k and was even fitter and faster when tuned up!

OK, to get the best thats £200 on wheels, £120 on tyres, possibly new good discs and pads £100, maybe dampers and then an Mi16 rear axle, your looking at £700, but mine was doing 25k a year without a grumble, tuned up and returning 43mpg.
Half the driving was 80mph A1 cruise, the other half was blatting from Timble to Collingham on the back roads every day come rain, snow or shine, getting through T1-S every 5000 miles, and pretty much overtaking everything in sight just "making progress"...

To say the 306 Gti6 was acclaimed as one of THE fwd hot hatches of the day, I found my old Tdi was more involving to drive over those types of roads... and the lack of grunt really doesn't matter if the chassis is enjoyable, and you can always get ~ 115-120bhp from the engines with a tweak of the pump...

Not bad for what they are and what they cost...

Similar to what Mr Whippy said, go to Pool, East of Otley, starting on the B6161.Then take the first connecting road to the B6451 which will take you to the A59. This is a Great Drive and can link up in a circuit to the route from Otley that was mentioned.

Also, make the effort to go up to the Yorkshire Moors! The route from Kirbymoorside - Hutton le hole - up to Castleton and on to Guisborough is legendary.......

Have fun!

Yes another vote for the north of Leeds. Its the road out of Otley to Farnley over the resovoir then up Norwood Edge past the Sun Inn to the A59. However it has been ruined slightly by the introduction of a 50mph limit and it is quite heavily policed. Its popular with the motor bikes.

Any of the minor roads around this area are good. Memories of crazy nights doing "Navigational Scatters" on these roads are coming back.....how nobody had a huge one I will never know....

Which bit is 50mph now? The one that runs from Pool, then over Lindley Wood reservoir bridge, then up the back to Norwood past the mast?
Noticed there is a 40mph through Norwood now which is ok I guess, but the problem was never speed generally, just excessive speed past the blind junctions, and it still hasn't stopped people going too quickly where there was a danger in the first place even at 40mph!

Stupidity really, 50mph is far too slow for some bits, and far too fast for others... still have to use your bloody noggin to stay safe, so why impose a top-end limit that is probably too slow for much more of the road now?

Dumbasses! If they want to make it safer they need to pull the bikers (who overtake into cars and cut bends with their heads) and car drivers (the ones who cut bends into bikers path) for dangerous driving, not just think a sign with paint is gonna do something!

Knee jerk reaction crap mad

Driven those roads hundreds, no thousands of times, in all weather and conditions, and a sign isn't going to stop a single accident! Only appropriate speed out there will save lives, and that doesn't come on painted aluminium sheets!

Rant over

I cant remember precisly where it is but "thought theres another ace bit of road gone" when I drove it. Its somewhere on the section after the top of Norwood on the way to the Sun Inn and maybe past the Sun Inn. The bends after the Sun Inn are some of my favourite, tight but you can see the road ahead.

Head North out of Leeds and pick up King Lane in Alwoodley drive about 2 miles north, once your past all the house you will be driving along side a golf course at the next cross roads turn right on to Eccup Lane. This is a great road that really does let you know if your cars handles or not. This was my daily commute to Harrogate taking in great roads.
When I’m looking for a new car I always try taking it for a test run on this route after
I bought an Audi A4 2.4 first morning on this road realised what a mistake, the Audi wallowed, rolled and bottomed out. All my previous Alfas, GTi’s never a problem.
Once you have completed this 2, 3 mile section you’re on to Arthington Road, left for Pool or right Harrogate to pick up some off the other recommended routes.

The road of doom!

It's great, but soo many narrow bends, kids on push bikes and god knows what else I've spotted along there...

The bit as you drop down towards the Weardly bend is great, as you start heading down the hill it opens up loads and is a great test of a car, but up top past the pub is pretty iffy

Some great roads up round that way though, but you really need to be on the ball, surprisingly busy even though they feel quite ruraly...

Mr Whippy your right it can get busy with walkers and cyclists. I use this road very early on a morning when there is little traffic.

We had some nights on the navigational scatters (road races...) There was one guy in a Renault 4 that won them all. The reason he drove a R 4 was apparently you couldnt roll them..........I think it was the first car he didnt. Fun, crazy nights.

Buttertubs pass north of Hawes - if you're a scaredy cat or at all concerned about 500 feet drops of death, then don't go anywhere near this road. It's supposed to be Clarkson's favourite road. But any roads around Leyburn and Hawes are amazing. I've been up in a V12 E-type and my Triumph Vitesse. And I can't sleep at night thinking about taking my Chimp up there the first good weather we get!

Also some great roads around Sherburn in Elmet and Monk Fryston. Avoid going through South Milford 'cause of the speed humps. North West of Sherburn there are some excellent "whites" (Codhill Lane, Copley Lane etc) which take you towards Aberford and Lotherton Hall. There's a bikers cafe around here, and bikers certainly know good roads.

Bingley Road over Bingley Moor going West out of Menston has some amazing dips where the road just dissppears completely (a bit like they do over the Scottish borders). Take care and drive it a few times before you take it at any speed.
