Hi

I'm based in Plymouth and have found quite a few nice roads over the last year or so.
But i'm now looking for a bit of variety, so if anyone can recommend some great roads to enjoy over the winter that would be great.

Cheers,
AL

Im in the same area & have found a couple.

Torpoint to Trerulefoot round about is a corker, albeit if its clear and your not blocked by a tractor.

Or the Looe road from Polbathic is pretty good following it to Liskeard...erm,there seemed some good ones up on the moors but you have to be carefull not to hit the beastie's that live up there.

depends what you want really, what are you driving?

They are also a couple of my favourites when "back home", my personal fav is Drains Valley not quick but very special.

Al,

If you don't mind a bit of a trek, the road from Sourton (nr Okehampton) to Great Torrington is a belter. From Plymouth, you're looking at 45mins to get to the start of it, but from there you'll have 30+ miles + superb bends and some long straights with great visibility. I keep meaning to do this route again myself at some point. I used to drive it a lot as when I met my wife she was living in north devon and I was in sunny Plymouth. Give it a go!

Pop up the A38 to Ashburton, then take the road across Dartmoor to Two Bridges/Princetown, then take a right at Two Bridges, along to Postbridge. As you come out of Postbridge, there's the Warren House Inn on the left, ideal for a bite to eat and a bit of refreshment! Then carry on along to Mortenhampstead, down to Bovey Tracey, and ten back down the A38 to Plymouth.

It's a nice run if you don't encounter any tourists or Sunday drivers !!!

I used to take that route home in the summer when driving back from work in Plymouth, to home in Newton Abbot!

Watch out for sheep in the road though, and it's a 40 limit all the way so take it steady, like all us locals do... hehe

He's right- then when you get to Torrington take the Road heading towards Beaford- it's a classic and underused go through Beaford and turn off at Winkleigh towards Exeter- another beaut. Then from Exeter you've a choice of roads home all of which I imagine you'd know. This loop is a fave with bikers and was with me when I used to live down there.

There is a road from North Devon (Barnstable) to Exeter the A377 I think which is a great blast

BUT

Be carefull on the A362 to get to Barnstable. Its a fast wide road with Plod at loads of location picking off speeders.

Also the signs on the 377 are as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike

A right hand curve sign is just before a hair pin bend with a junction on it.

A mate and I rode it on out bikes and nearly died a few times along the way
I have driven it loads of times in the car and it is great.

At one point the road follows the railway track for several miles and on a number of occassions I have raced the train!

Have fun but be carefull!!

What about the road from the Torpoint Ferry to Liskeard via Looe!

Bit tight and twisty in places, but a nice wide sweeping road in places near Torpoint

Ooohhh, that's a goody! Just watch for those tightening off camber bends though.

Dartmoor is great. My favourites are the b3357 and b3212 (newly surfaced after princetown, and with a good pub in the other direction on the way to postbridge) driving.
There is a fantastic s-bend somewhere on the b3357 between dartmeet and two bridges (i think).

The teignmouth-torquay coast road is also unmissable, lots of 1st and 2nd gear hairpins, although you can't see far ahead.

I know this road really well as I used to live in Exeter very near the southern end of it. Yes, it's a great road - fantastic in places - but one thing that spoils it for me is the almost total lack of anywhere to overtake. (Unless you're on a motorbike and/or have a deathwish). I've only driven it once without getting held up at all, and that was at 11pm one evening...

Driven it a few times from Barnstaple in the small hours and it's a cracking blast.

Wouldn't even bother trying it during the day though.

Another empty fun road is the old A30 between Exeter and Okehampton.

Simonsbath to Lynmouth - just watch the sheep, and the dogs. And any of the other B roads across Exmoor National Park

If heading down to barnstaple - heres a couple of great undiscovered roads...

turn off the A 361 when you get to the end of the dual carriageway at Tiverton then take either the B3227 or even better the B3137 to South Molton. The latter road is fantastic and traffic free. Even in the height of the summer holiday rush last year and the year before in my Elise I would often drive the whole way without coming up to any traffic during the day on a weekend!

great for the summer runs - the back roads from plymouth to mothercoombe for a b-b-q on the beach, or the back roads to bigbury and have a b-b-q on the beach. or even salcombe.

yes

Dartmoor out of season is awesome.

I remember going up their thruought the winter/spring of '97 preparing for 10 tors. The only people on the roads apart from our mini bus seemed to be bikers doing some very serious speeds.

Would be great at 4am I suppose. Not so sure after the tourists have woken up/before they've gone to bed.

Speaking of which, I'm going back home at the weekend, should have a look at the weather and decide what to drive down smile
