Anyone recommend some great roads Devon/Cornwall?
Discussion
I found the most incredible road a few weeks ago - running along the north Coast of Cornwall from St Ives down through Zennor. It made me hanker for a Grp B rally car something rotten! Its just awesome.
Also a big fan of the road from Pensylvania in Exeter that runs out of the top of the city towards Stoke Canon - got a couple of brilliant hairpins - it'd make a fab hill climb...

Al,
If you don't mind a bit of a trek, the road from Sourton (nr Okehampton) to Great Torrington is a belter. From Plymouth, you're looking at 45mins to get to the start of it, but from there you'll have 30+ miles + superb bends and some long straights with great visibility. I keep meaning to do this route again myself at some point. I used to drive it a lot as when I met my wife she was living in north devon and I was in sunny Plymouth. Give it a go!

He's right- then when you get to Torrington take the Road heading towards Beaford- it's a classic and underused go through Beaford and turn off at Winkleigh towards Exeter- another beaut. Then from Exeter you've a choice of roads home all of which I imagine you'd know. This loop is a fave with bikers and was with me when I used to live down there. And that Pensylvania-stoke cannon road was the first where I learnt how much fun rwd could be, and my friend following learnt how much fun understeering a ford focus into a hedge could be
One of my favourite roads has to be the one going alongside (south side) the A361 from Tiverton to South Molton. Fast, and with undulations like a roller coaster, never mind the complete lack of ANY other cars....
From there take either the B3137 for a few huge straights, or the B3227 to Umberleigh, then down the A377 to Exeter (but can become a bore after Crediton due to traffic).
Then the road to Budleigh Salterton is ok, but for an amazing drive go to the top of telegraph hill on the A380 and take the road to Starcross.... hairpins, fast forest sections and a massive straight x2...

The St. Ives to St. Just road, one of the best around if only for the views. As most roads in Cornwall though it's not worth bothering with in the Summer - it's getting late enough in the year though that I feel an early morning raid coming on Another of my favourites is the road running from Helston down to the Lizard Point, some great blasts and twists along that, including a brilliant little valley with hairpins on both sides. The best bit is that when you get to the end, the only way out is to turn around and drive it all over again!
From plymouth, out to Yelverton roundabout (60 from Roborough to Yelverton, VERY occasional speed gun in the dip in the middle), from there head Towards tavistock (60 for 5 miles bar a 30 through Horrabridge - GATSO going the other way at the bottom).
30 into Tavistock, left at Drake statue, signposted Gunnislake. Out of Tavi (500yds from the statue) into a 60 limit, fantastic drivers road, hard corners, lots of thought and speed changes, but dont rag it.
Follow this road for about 4 miles. 40/30 through gunnislake, and i have occasionally seen speed guns there. Back to 60, and follow the road to Callington, about 6 miles.
Two choices here. Left at 1st roundabout, follow down the A388, or carry on the A390 to liskeard. I prefer the first option (Bit shorter, less Dual Carriageway).
Assuming first choice, i like to turn right at the Stoketon turn off, then left onto the A38, but you can just carry on the A388 onto the A38 anyway.
Then quick away from the roundabout, 70 down the dual carriageway to the tunnel. 30 Though the tunnel, and that is well covered by the scameras. Across the bridge, and through the toll (A whole pound if you havent got some tickets!) then carry on up the carriageway to the turnoff that suits. I come off at Manadon to go back towards Roborough.
A good selection of different roads, mostly quiet in slow times (But can be busy at peak). One or two things to do, but i like it in the evening when its quieter, and the lights give you an idea of whats round the corner...
