I'm off to the M6 J17 (holmes chapel) from the M27 on friday.

Now sorry to be dumb but unsure how to re-route so i can use the M6 toll road that by-passes Birmingham?

I believe my route will be:

M27-M3-A34-M40.

But how do i get from the M40, to the toll road, and then on to the M6?

Thanks for any help and sorry i'm dumb!

mm have your £4 ready as its gone up

where in holmes chapel??

make sure you get off at 18 and not 17 as sat nav or route directions will tell you as 17 is a bastard junction it has been decided to put traffic lights there but there is no money, been in the pipe line for years

Can't say I've noticed that myself and I'm a regular tag user on the Tollbergring.

Used to go M6 - Eastleigh while ago - dodged A34 - by going up M3 to around Lego land 'SH(A33???) THEN A429M(???) to High Wycomb and M40.
Another alternative to M42/M40 - leave M40 at J15, A46(TALIVAN HAZARD) to ward Coventry , A45 south(gATSO ) ,thence A46 to M6/J2and north to TOLL.
If M40 's bad at J10 - A43( ONE Truvello in middle of nowhere) toWARD Northampton and M1 at J 15A --bear left at J17 for M6.

Spoilt for choice. ---who needs Sat Nav.

M6 Toll?

Will never use it on principle, I already pay enough to use the roads in fuel tax and tax disc, charge again, they can B'ger off.

Toll roads, road pricing via the back door.

But it's a private built road isn't it?
to be honest though, unless your hitting the M5/M6 area between 5&6 I wouldn't bother, even TomTom doesn't route you up it on Fastest Route

It won't because satnavs work out a route based on a theoretical average speed and distance to be covered.

As using the M6 Troll road adds to the distance the machine will think its slower.

Unless you have a satnav with TMC and there is a holdup registered on the M6 proper.

This issue of it being a longer distance was something the New Labour feckwits on the Transport Select Committee had problems with. They wanted to know why more lorries didn't use the Troll road.

The concept that the cost of the toll, plus the extra fuel used, plus the extra time taken for speed limited lorries all meant extra cost, ie time = money, was an issue that flew entirely above the Labourites heads and splatted against the wall. They could just not figure out that unless the M6 proper was completely bogged up using the M6 Troll is a non starter for most heavies.

You'd be unlucky to get pulled on there, but it does happen, I can testify

They apparantly talked about making it no speed limit as it's a private road, but the emergency services said they wouldn't attend any accidents if they did that..

A year or two ago, my friend and I were making 1+ lepton progress up the toll road when we noticed a laser on a bridge. Both of us slowed down immediately and a mile or so later on there was a fleet of T5's dishing out tickets. Luckily, there were no spare ones to deal with us so we escaped punishment but I'll not be doing that again. Its a good stretch of motorway though. Principles aside, it beats sitting in the M6 carpark for hours on end.
