Sorry its a dumb question - how to get on the M6 toll road?

You'd be unlucky to get pulled on there, but it does happen, I can testify
I use it a couple of times a month, and it's unusual if I *don't* see an unmarked Volvo S60 stopping someone. Used it yesterday, heading North at about 5.30PM and sure enough there it was with all its hidden xenons flashing, pulling someone over southbound.
Used the m6 toll for the first time in ages on Monday. We went down to do the Prodrive tour, film here: www.scoobysmacs.co.uk/Videos/prodrive%20tour%202.wmv
So what is the official line on speed along it? I know it's a private road, but surely it comes under the same rules and regs as a normal road? ie; the speed limit is still the same.

Surely if you're going up the M40 and travelling further up the M6 than junction 11 then the better choice is to go in the other direction on the M42 then up the M5.
Yes the toll road is nice and fast but from the M40 you have to go through the variable speed limit of the M42 which is heavily congested.
I do M40 -> Stafford on a regular basis and have always found that there isn't much in it either way, certainly not 4 quids worth of time savings.
And yes I've seen people pulled for speeding on the toll road too, last incidence I was in L1 when the Vectra getting pulled cut in front of me a little closer than I'd like, moments later the police Volvo cut in front of me with less than a car length to spare, and was braking heavily. Had to swerve around it!

i'd agree since it went up i've taken the tag off the car and go the normal way easier to get onto m42 or i've got the option of going down the m5 then going along the m42 to get to the m40
just set off a little earlier or get there a little later but £4.00 is no longer worth it
it will soon be £4.50 then £5.00 etc etc so less will use it and it will be a big white elephant

The M6 Toll is governed by the same laws of the land, its supposed to be a 70mph limit. There is more and more enforcement being dedicated to that road now following an increase in fatal and serious RTC's on that route. Tactics such as parking a camera van on the A5 which runs along side and overlooks the toll is now being used. Don't be fooled there are 6 unmarked traffic vehicles operating on there at anyone time and from T6 to the M6 Staffs police use it as a good source for nailing there KPI's each month. The papers in cannock and Stafford have large lists of drivers knicked and heavilly fined - location M6 Toll !So what is the official line on speed along it? Did you know that the M40 is actually a toll road as well ?
the government pays a bill to its operator based on the amount of traffic using the road, which is measured by sensors roadside.
Cheers all
I regularly travel up from High Wycombe to Telford and to Stoke and always go M40, M42 south, M5 to the M6. Flatly refuse to use the toll road because, a) don't agree with the principle of privately owned roads when motorists pay so much tax already to build a completely new motorway system several times over each year, b) to get to it from the M40 you have to use the M42 north through the variable limit disaster area (which, incidently has the worst road surface of any motorway in Britain) and c) as many above testify, the local constabulary use it to make as much cash as possible and fill up their allocation for the month.
I really would recommend giving it a miss. As the price goes from £3.50 to £4 to £5 & £6, hopefully usage will drop even lower than it's woeful current levels, the operator will go out of business and the whole idea of private toll roads will be dropped like a stone.

I totally agree with that, and I was a concientious objector for ages, but I've started to use it more and more now. You just feel so stupid sat in a queue to get from M5 to M6 (or driving around a million rounabouts on the Black Country route cut through) when you know you could be cruising blissfully up the toll road.Marvindodgers said:

To be fair, that generally flows reasonably well.Marvindodgers said:

I set my cruise control for low 70's and just breeze along in lane 1. Let those who think it's a private road attract the attention of the Police - I've rarely used the toll road without seeing an unmarked Volvo S60 stopping someone.Marvindodgers said:

I'd love to know how they're doing - does anyone know?Flat in Fifth said:

http://www.m6toll.co.uk/newsdetail.asp?id=82That is a link to the quarterly traffic figures, you can go back to 2003.
Do the mathematics and you'll see it's a financial disaster.
Bit difficult (for me) to tell, but looks like after interest charges it's probably there or thereabouts breaking even. They're trying cut costs, and last time I used it I noticed quite a number of closed toll booths (it had struck me on a previous visit that every single one was open).
