Had to go from Wigan to Middlesbrough today, part of my blat there was along the A683 Sedbergh to Kirkby Stephen (ish) road. 15 miles (approx) of pure bliss especially the bit near the Fat Lamb (pub). For my return blat I used the super Buttertubs Pass road from Thwaite to Hawes. If anyone has not "done" these roads ... give them a try!

If you want to take a preview at the Buttertubs Pass it's featured on this bit of the Clarkson Car years
where he is re-united with his old Escort Cosworth

you could drive over to Shotley Bridge or the a68 then take the B6278 to Middleton in Teesdale, B6276 to Brough on to KS then b6259 to Gardsdale Head, A684 to Hawes, B6255 Via Ribblehead to Ingleton

done this twice in less than a month absolutely brilliant

very little traffic (mid-week), excellent views, cross views, all manner of bends

just watch out for the sheep who decide the grass is greener on the other verge

When i went to the Lake District a couple of years back, i just had to drive the Buttertubs Pass, i also remembered it from Clarksons Car Years, and even though i did it in an old MK2 Golf, it was still fun and the views were superb, a quality road!!!

If you go on the Buttertubs pass from Hawes, when you get to the other end, turn left through Twaite and Keld and then turn right up to Tan Hill. That is a good run, especially in the reverse direction, in which case you need to turn right at the end of the Buttertubs and drive down to Reeth. Turn left in the village green up Arkengarthdale and up to Tan Hill. At Tan Hill you take a left turn down to Keld. It's fantastic on a clear sunny day.

But just watch out for the sheep.

I was there a couple of weeks ago, and I was stunned to
find that there are brown tourist signs from the A66.

It's gone all mass market. Nice SnoCat though.

Fantastic road. First did it in a red SIII E-type drop-head coupe. Group of chaps were out shooting, and one guy dressed in a wax jacket carrying a shotgun doffed his cap to us.

Also did the run very fast in the Vitesse. Mrs Falfa was in the passenger seat staring out over the hosepipe fence at the huge drop to her left, shouting at me to keep it below 60. Oh how I laughed. Until we got to the other end and I saw the nearly-flat rear tyre!

Best of all was the run in the Chim! Oooh er!
