I plan to drive from Brighton to North of Inverness soon and I have no idea what the best route is. Any suggestions on the least painful route? It will be oever the weekend, leaving on Saturday evening..

Cheers

A9 - fastish, but busy and infested by BiB and cameras.

A82 - longer, but a magnificent driving road.

Brighton to above Glasgow cant help, but Turn off the A9 at Dalwhinnie, and take the old A9 (cant remember the road name) that runs parrallel to the A9 though Newtonmore, Kingussie, Aviemore, Carrbridge and the rejoins before Sclodch Pass. Last bit of entertainment, after carrbridge, just before joining the A9 again, after dip underneath bridge, along the straight up to the 90 degree left to the junction, Go straight on, instead of round the 90 left. (Go Over the cattle grid) You are now on a Lovely little section that I use when I see Lorries on the A9. The challenge is to come out ahead of them, 2/3 miles down the road. Enjoy the Chicane over the bridge where the Old A9 passes underneath the New A9 in a valley, then watch the next RH corner, tightens and can be slippy, then along the straight and rejoin the A9. The final house at the end of that straight though, slow down. They have kids, and Dogs, and will get upset if they hear someone hammering it through their back yard.

I'd go up the A1 (no cameras in Yorkshire or Durham) then A696/A68 from Newcastle-Edinburgh or the A697/A68 from Morpeth (just north of Newcastle) There's a couple of cams over the border in Scotland on both routes, but lovely roads through Northumberland - better than the M6 any day unless you're in a hurry. Then, it's a detour, but well worth it, I'd go Stirling, Fort William (Rannoch Moor is wonderful) and across to Inverness.

Sorry if it's a bit late but I did enjoy thinking about the drive as I wrote it
