I'm planning a little road trip with me and a mate in 2 seperate cars. We're going to head over to the 'ring from Calais but then we want to find some decent roads after that, nice scenery would be good too.

Don't want to go as far down as Stelvio etc. trying to keep the whole trip well under 2,000 miles. Are there any good roads in the Black Forest or around Germany and which would be the best route to take back to Calais.

I guess the limit South is about Zurich area, is that far enough for some decent driving roads?

And what would be the best way there/back?

Thanks a lot!

Also, what are the petrol prices like in Germany, Belgium and Switzerland etc. where will be the cheapest to fill up and is V-Power readily available all across Europe?

I did Austria and back a couple of weeks ago
for 1,800 miles.

It seems a bit pointless to travel hundreds
of miles to the Black Forest when the absolute
delight of the Alps are only 100 miles or so further south.

Not really.

Last time I stopped over in Luxembourg for
some cheap fags/booze/petrol.

Prices in D are up to £1.08 a liter for Vpower on the motorways.
Money well spent in my view.

Prices in B are similar to UK.

CH is chronically expensive for everything and
they *hate* cars.

VPower is pretty common in my experience across Europe.
Avoid motorway service stations if you want cheap petrol.

?????????????

Evening,
I am living as a Frenchman since 1949 in Switzerland and I do not think that
it is more expensive than the UK. Act. 1 Litre of 98 petrol is 0,68 GBP, hotels
can be the same as in England, very expensive in cities like Zurich or Lucerne,
Geneva, Davos or Gstaad etc.Hating cars: look at your own green-heads: if you
leave black marks on the street after every traffic-light you'll have the same problems in the UK as here, SUVs are only a problem for some....f.....s
who do not look what electricity production et al
are emitting in other countries...
i.e. our German neighbours ;-)
A tip: there are marvellous litte roads in Eastern Belgium/Ardennes and around the Nuerburgring plus a relatively unknown area here

Enjoy your trip.

We have just come back from a Transuropean thrash...

Black forest is great - we staying in Staufen - great roads and once you get past the tourist traps the roads are empty.

Also did the Grossglockner and a couple of others.

If you want the name of the place to stay in Satufen drop me a PM.

Another vote here for the Vosges. The Route des Cretes is as memorable mountain road as they can be. Not too hairpinish like Stelvio but more fast and sweepy.

(mind that in June there was a corner in the south side that was partially colapsed smile)

Agreed, the Routes des Crêtes is great BUT BEWARE of bikers at the weekend, they're often suicidal, cutting corners etc and if you're quick on that road it can lead to problems with them. Many bikers killed on that road, but the Département of Haut Rhin does not want to make this too well known!

Good comments about la route des cretes, additionally there are some great
roads north of Strasbourg towards Wissembourg then west, or just north into Germany west of Land, a region called Pfaelzerwald.

Enjoy :-))

I'd head down to Spa-Francorchamps when entering the mainland. From there, just enter Monschau (Germany) in your GPS, and use shortest route... From there, enter the Nürburgring, again shortest route... Takes you through some amazing valleys smile

From there, it depends where you want to go, Luxemburg is cheap to buy cigarettes and petrol, and the Champagne area in France is amazing to drive as well...

Super 98 is about 1.30-1.35EU per litre in Belgium these days...
