London to s.france via provence
Discussion
Chaps,
Middle of summer need to be in s of france for a wedding.
Will have a few days to get there so wanted to go via provence.
Question is 2fold.. Does anyone have any idea rough costs of tolls etc on this route.
secondly, on the way back will only really have a day to go from st tropez back to UK, anything quicker than driving? ie car on train etc?
I suppose 3rdly, am I crazy taking car into south of france in mid summer?
Thanks in anticipation.

Wouldn't have thought so - done it 3 times ( different cars ) and found it quite painless. Never been in August though when it's supposed to be really busy - just June/July Middle of summer need to be in s of france for a wedding.

Tolls depend which way you go. Much cheaper to go down via Orleans / Clermont Ferrand than via reims / LyonMiddle of summer need to be in s of france for a wedding.

Craig, try this website
If you put your departure & arrival towns in the top left corner, it will give you a price - if you can't understand any French, PM me, and I'll have a look for you.
St Tropez + Summer = HUGE Traffic Jams in high temperatures - try taking the back road in via Gassin and Ramatuelle.
I would take the train back or split the journey into at least two nights - French School Holidays mean bottlenecks everywhere - as do Bank Holidays!
HTH!

Visited St Tropez in summer many times over the years and found the following works ;Get in at 7.30 for breakfast (Senequier on the harbour)and watch the town/big boats wake up, do your wandering round etc then aim to be leaving by 11.00 latest as this is when the masses arrive and the traffic coming in is awful.
Never had a problem and it's nice and quiet
Craig this is quite a good site, it gives you the route and how much the tolls are.

It`s difficult not to go to Provence when going to St Tropez! I would use the Route Napleon as described and try staying in the Var (nicest, most unspoilt part of Provence).
You can drive it in a day assuming limited traffic problems (unlikely in August)but it`s a slog and often better accomplished at night solo or with a fearless friend (if you get my meaning!). Much better to put the car on the train overnight at Avignon - which is closer to St Tropez - or Nice and wake up in Calais.

Hi - we went to Provence last Summer. Roads as you would expect were good. Allow approx £50-£60 each way. We'd highly recommend the 'Route Napoleon' from Grenoble. I am assured this takes as long as using the Motorway down to the coast - a absolute blinding drive .

Be careful with Grasse and south of, though, you can hit big traffic. Its time to take the mountain roads from there.K1 CERB
