i personally think that 550 miles is a tad too much for one day, also when i consider the route you're proposing.

Pah! Get the boring part of the route out of the way in one swoop wink 550miles is easy on French autoroutes, you'll be there in plenty of time for some dinner & 1664's

I'm thinking anything around 3 hours, lunch, then another 3 hours, max per day.
You wouldn't want to be doing that every single day, but 3hours per section is not that much really & affords plenty time for traffic jams, change of plans or soaking up the scenery

we appear to have two threads in one here, hence the confusion, sorry.
i) 550 miles south to grenoble, fine - agreed .... we did many more in one day last year.
ii) we always use www.viamichelin.co.uk for timings moreso than mileage.
iii) you're never away from hotels before 10am (esp. if rinsing/washing cars).
drive 'til lunch at 1(ish), two hours for lunch, then just a couple of hours to the next hotel ... iv) the couple of cold beers in the hotel garden, just after you arrive is the best part of the day.
v) we suit five hours per day driving and a day off every four or five.

Did Calais to Nice (following Route Napolean and Verdon Gorge) in 2 days ... I was knackered!!!

Reckon spreading over 5 days would be much more relaxing (woman's perspective)

Hey all,

This is really great... definitely helping plan the trip!

Some more questions though:

1) Between Gap and Saint-Auban there's what looks like a motorway that runs parallel to the N85.. I think it's the A51. Should you stay on the N85 (D1085) or take the motorway for a bit? Do you miss anything special?

2) At the Verdon Gorge, is there a particular scenic road to take for the full experience?

Cheers!
J

If you've got the time (and the traffic isn't too heavy) I'd stay on the N85.....

Cool, that's what I thought.

Ok, last question; do people recommend staying in Nice or Cannes?

Cheers!

Castellane is a good spot for a base camp, and sits nicely on the N85.
Just follow the gorge/river/road.
Can recommend the Hotel du Commerce in the town.
