Well me and the girlfriend are planning a trip to Lake Gada and Como, and was looking at a variety of ways to get there!

Plane and Rent-A-Car

Driving the GT3 the whole distance

I obviously would like to do a driving holiday and take in some good roads and amazing scenery.

So if anyone has done a similar trip please can you give me a few pointers.

Must see & Must Drive locations, I have a few ideas, but would like some input from others.

Oh and some good hotels with parking (Secure!)

We are looking at a 11 day trip so was looking at a 3 day drive there and back with several one night stops.

Thanks in advance for the info

I'm doing exactly the same sort of trip later in the year.

I'm not aware of too many great roads in northern France, and generally attempt to get away from the ports area as quickly as possible. Thereafter I intend to follow the Meuse valley with a possible detour to some of the battlefields and memorials around the Verdun area.

Most people will recommend the Stelvio Pass, which is OK if you want to travel a bit out of your way when travelling between Switzerland and Italy. I've had recommended to me the Furka/Grimsel/St Gotthard passes which are a more direct option, running from near Interlaken in Switzerland to not very far from Como.

I can't see the point in having a GT3 and not using it to go Grand Touring.

Reims has the interesting circuit. Nice hotel in Troyes called Hotel d'Oiseaux or something like that, I'd recommend it. Parking is in the lane, but I wouldn't expect any problems. The Vosges is supposed to be very interesting.

You are right the GT3 is the only option............ not sure about how the Leather Buckets and my arse are going to be after 6-8 hours of driving a day..... or my ear! (From Girlfriend complaining about seats and my driving!)

Not going until July so the weather will be good.

Might do the first leg to the Champange Region or a Vineyard somewhere for the first night.

Then hammer down in to Switzerland for the second night.

Then the Lakes for the 3rd and stay there for 5 days.

On the way back go via South Of France and make our way back.

If you are doing the trip with two stopovers you shouldn't need to spend more than 6 hours in the seat. Each day you only need to cover between 250 to 300 miles to get to Como, unless you take a massive detour.

Surely that means only 3 hours of driving "cough" Avg 100mph! Only kidding i want to take in the scenery for most of it and also try to get semi ok MPG!

Just need some people to help give me some insider info on where to go.

We're doing similar trip in May but ferrying to Zeebrugge, (there are good reasons). Not in a GT3 though - Volvo S60 D5 so should be a nice run.

If you look at Via Michelin it will plan you a great route, (first night in Beaune, perhaps ?), point-to-point and total distances, visuals of road signs and it even prints out scamera locations. Loads of info on the site. Worth looking at IMO.

All you need

I still think the Alpine saddle
NE of Brunico, Italy and west of Huben, Austria
was an interesting road.

Went to Lake Como and Gards last year - was fantastic - especially in a TVR! Went from Calais to Leige - visited Fronchomp racetrack. We then headed through Ardenne, Blackforest, St.Moritz, Como, Garda, Stelvio Pass, Seefeld, Stuttgart, Ulm, Calais. Fantastic trip. Northern France can be a boring drive but we were in Forest runs in a couple of hours - much more fun! Enjoy the drive!

we didn't book anywhere. We just travelled and stopped around 6pm wherever we were. We always seemed to find somewhere - just! We also found you could negotiate on price if they had rooms as it was so late! At lake Garda we stopped at Linmsone on nw of lake at hotel called Caravell. Great hotel and good parking - I even managed to wash the car there!

Try getting a car-train thingy. http://www.seat61.com/Motorail.htm

Could save on a bit of driving if the thought of 1000 miles in a car doesn't fill all occupants with joy. Haven't tried it myself, but may do this summer - now I know it exists.

If you fancy a few car things to do, Modena isn't far. I spent a while there last year and I may know a few places to eat/look at cars that aren't all that easy to find. PM me if you're interested.

Can I suggest you take a look at www.egotrips.eu
Any help ?
What does this site lack ?

P.S How about you all take a primary school course in English/Italian grammar, then come back to me so that I can understand what your blogs really mean !
I for one, do not have a grasp of Mandarin Chinese !
Which of you can boast of a GCSE pass in English above 'Q' level ?
If, as I suspect, the answer is none, then my heart goes out to you all
"me and the girlfriend"
"Lake Gada"
"Limsosine"

Please !

The above is naturally said in the "best possible taste",but if you wish to disagree, please 'bring it on'
