Okay, so I've been reading the "top 10 driving roads" topic and that got me thinking...

Anyone got any thoughts on the WORST roads to drive on? There's loads of roads I use quite often that I wish I didn't have to, and for many reasons, such as being too busy all the time, too boring, stupid speed limits and of course speed cameras.

A few examples:

The A66 - specifically the section from Penrith to Scotch Corner. Nowadays on that stretch the road changes from dual to single carriageway and back 13 times (7 DC sections, 6 SC sections). Also guilty of over-enforcement by CSCP, usually at sites in no way connected with accidents as stated elsewhere in the forum.

The A90 - from Dundee all the way up to Aberdeen. This commits the double sin of being a deadly boring road along with the most OTT number of gatsos and talivan ambush points I've yet seen. Very stressful to drive up there because you annoy all the locals who know where the cameras are and want to speed in between them.

The A57 - 2 sections, the first being Snake Pass where the speed limit has been dropped to 50mph (enforced on the straightest bit of the whole road) for no credible reason, the second being the stretch from Sheffield to Worksop which is just hopelessly inadequate for the amount of traffic it carries.

The M60 - Worst thought-out road in the country with multiple sins, including (but not limited to) badly designed junctions, the SPECS section, and worst of all the tendency to flood with no warning. Its a great place to spend 4 hours, NOT!

I think that's enough to get started. Anyone else have any thoughts?

A12 from the M25 through Essex. Vile abortion of a road.

Appalling lane discipline, chock full of HGV's, dangerously frequent lane drops followed by gains.

yes The most deadly boring road in the world and it just seems to go on forever.

I'd throw the A69 in there as well. Too many lorries and every section that opens up to two lanes has a camera on it just to piss you off. Same can be said for a lot of the A1 towards the border as well.

A406 North Circular - rubbish. Seriously, why make it 2/3 lanes most of the way, but only 1 for a 400m stretch near Southgate? And it is 40 or 50mph? Make your mind up and we'll all know how fast to go!

A14 from the M11 to A1M - shoddily surfaced, SPECS everywhere justified by the hundreds of tiny junctions everywhere.

Haverfordwest high street. They obviously had left over tarmac so just placed it in lumps (no exaggeration) at the side of the road and then placed white lines over it! Its worse than if pikeys did it.

There's also a huge speed hump with no pre warning and no way to escape if your car can't get over it - good ol' welsh one way system!

Horrible bloody road. The way it switches between single and dual carriageway is a joke, and the fixed/talivan locations are the only places you can overtake safely. Complete fking joke.

The A82 is 20 miles longer, all single carriageway, dates from the 1930's, and is just as fast.

Yep - totally agree. A9 has put the only lots of points I have ever had on my licence. A82 is a much much more scenic road and better to drive (apart from the truly awful 12 miles or so from Tarbet to Ardlui - that MUST be due for an upgrade)

The A1 from Morpeth to Edinburgh
- the #2 road into Sweaty Sock land and it's rubbish.

The M20 westbound - while it's a decent
wide road, it seems to be driven mostly by blind
people and folks who only passed their test that morning
whenever I'm on it.

The A27 from Folkstone to Southampton
- it should be mway all the way.

The A66 needed upgrading to dual cway
about thirty years ago. These days that
upgrade is *somewhat* overdue.

A thousand times yes. A major route that pootles through towns and 40 limits ad traffic lights. Stupid road.

I nominate the A36 and the other roads you'd use from Bristol to Southampton. Always busy, always slow, just dreadful.

The A623 from Chesterfield to Manchester. Could be great if a zombie apocalypse happened and no one else was around. As it is it is infested with 35mphers and 30 limits that make it akin to self harm.

A46 from Newark to the dual section approaching Leicester. Vomitably horrid road. Dual part is fine, but the single sections make suicide look appealing.

The A120 from Braintree across to Marks Tey in Essex is truly dreadful, yet cannot be more than 8 miles long.

The A1(M) from the M25 north past Stevenage is a bad road.

M25 from the M4 to the M1 or from the M1 anticlockwise to the M3. Too much traffic and even at 3.00am the speed limiters are showing 50 mph.

M6 Tollroad. No traffic yet crying out to be turned into a dragstrip.

A12 and A13....trucks, many of them foreign and people driving towards Suffolk (Gods waiting room).

Abbey Road in St John's Wood over a weekend with cars parked on either side making that part of North London a huge traffic jam.

M11 north of Stanstead, all the foreigners come out of the airport with their hire cars and sit on the fast lane at 40!

I've had some hairy moments with some people there.

Can't agree with the A57 Snake pass, on a clear day either at night or early morning its a great road and very challenging in parts. I agree with the Sheffield to Worksop section aprt from where its dual around worksop.

Can I also throw in the A17 from A1 to King's Lynn. Loads of HGvs, lots of GATSOs, the odd tractor doing 30, limited overtaking places and sporadic dual cway sections where everyone tries to overtake makes this a horrible section of road.

I travel regularly from Sheffield to Norwich and hvve started going M1, M18, A1 down to peterborough and then A47, A1101, A1122 and back onto the A47 to Norwich. Its probably 30 miles further but far less stressful. Also the A1122 section past Mareham Airfield is a great road.

Can I nominate the A34 between Stafford and Stoke.

An absolute bloody nightmare of DC, switching to SC, to unexpected strange-shaped islands, and a random merry-go-round of speed limits that go 60 to 30 to 40 to 60 to 50 to 30 to 60 in mind-bogglingly short distances.

Patrolled, of course, by both fixed and mobile scameras.

I drove it once. Never again.

sorry if i dont know the exact area but the a406 in area's is awful

sometimes its a lovely sweeping 2/3 lanes

but then there's one section where it goes to just one lane - and its like what the hell?!

the houses on the left are all boarded up so it does make u think that they're planning to expand the lane but it could well be just london being london.

the m6 is getting increasingly annoying. especially near stoke.

the drive up from london to the midlands on the m1 always puts me in the mood for a kip

and in manchester when ur driving in from the m60 you have to turn left on cheetham hill road - where those asian shops are - its just awful there. green street in east ham london is just as bad

smiller, I definitely agree on the A34: once was enough for me as well!

Lots of roads in that area have odd speed limits, for example a little further south the A5 near Cannock has a wide single carriageway section with lots of junctions (NSL, no cameras) then goes to DC with a 40 limit and loads of cameras!

I used to drive this section of the A46 2 or 3 times a week and hated every moment of it. As you say, once you reach the dual part it's fine but before then it's hell.

theres speed camera's on the A90? oops nah only joking last time i was on that road was a year ago and it was ok really, the road i hate is the A9 between perth and aviemore, worst part of my journeys down south just seems to drag on and on
