Weird, I actually didn't mind driving on the A9! I found that, particularly north of Pitlochry, the standard of driving improved massively: you could tell that a lot of the traffic was actually used to how to use a single carriageway road properly. Like on a lot of other major A-roads up north I was impressed by the standard of overtaking and the fact that ALL of the slower traffic was actually helping faster traffic to pass when possible. The road also has really, really good sightlines making safe, decisive overtaking a doddle. Maybe I just caught it on a couple of particularly good days?

The part of that road I really didn't like was heading south (sorry, I forget exactly where) there is a section near a junction with a central reservation where there are 2 lanes for all of about 300 yards: that caught me by surprise!

Can I nominate the A49 through Shropshire.

It should be a wonderful road, with plenty of interesting stretches through lovely scenery, but these days is clogged with wagons and drooling 40mph numpties that make it a misery.

I wish to nominate:

A12 - Absolutley awful from Bow to the A406. Equally bad from the M25>Kelvedon

A2 Blackwall Tunnel>Dartford. Actually a very, very fast road, but clogged full of SPECS & Not working GATSOs (which people still think work rolleyes 50mph limit

A1(M) between Steveange and St Neots NSL>60>50>60>NSL>50. Strange road layout too. Too many roundabouts

4th time it gets a mention but the A12 - John Peel actually put the A12 in Room 101 about 5 or so years ago.

In fairness, the A12 does pretty well for the traffic flows (up to 95000 vehs/day, 20% HGV)considering it's location, route, etc. The most congested parts are the sections with houses directly off the road, so it just can't be widened.

Anyway, other roads to be banished.
A414 past Harlow towards Hertford.
A47 (The entire thing)
A140 (The entire thing)

Okay, so I've been reading the "top 10 driving roads" topic and that got me thinking...
The A90 - from Dundee all the way up to Aberdeen. This commits the double sin of being a deadly boring road along with the most OTT number of gatsos and talivan ambush points I've yet seen. Very stressful to drive up there because you annoy all the locals who know where the cameras are and want to speed in between them.
yes The most deadly boring road in the world and it just seems to go on forever.

I'd throw the A69 in there as well. Too many lorries and every section that opens up to two lanes has a camera on it just to piss you off. Same can be said for a lot of the A1 towards the border as well.
Re: the A90, just as you come down the hill into the city from the south, the number of warning sirens that go off on the tomtom is unreal - mobile van sites, the 40mph limit, the gatso thereafter; all the way down the hill it's "warning: gatso; warning: mobile; warning: 40." Welcome to Aberdeen indeed.

True, but if you get lucky it's a fantastic road. I had a clear run along the A49 the other week and thoroughly enjoyed it driving

I admit, it's rare for that to happen though frown

Just driven here today...

the A10 between the M25 and Enfield. Horrendous lane merging and really silly junction configurations. A complete disgrace.

Can I also nomniate the A406 Southgate single lane section? If you can find an alternative in the week, avoid like the plague.

And another - the A13 between the tunnel and the city. A single lane abomination with a completely empty bus lane to your left...

Haverfordwest high street. They obviously had left over tarmac so just placed it in lumps (no exaggeration) at the side of the road and then placed white lines over it! Its worse than if pikeys did it.

There's also a huge speed hump with no pre warning and no way to escape if your car can't get over it - good ol' welsh one way system!
Which bit is that? I occasionally go to HWest and I really dont like the place, very confusing traffic layout.

... that plus the fact I'm usually very tired when I go there rolleyes
