At the begining of October, I'll be travelling down to san Marino for http://www.rallylegend.com/ and will be returning via the Stelvio. my question is, will it still be open mid October? I've tried Googling it but haven't found any specific date when it shuts due to the weather conditions. I'd rather know now so that I can plan another route back. Thanks.

Not sure if it's worth the effort. Very over rated, just hairpins and the views are not up to much.

Yeah, I've been reading some of the posts when I done a search, but personally I've always wanted "to do" a hairpinned mountain pass. It may be over rated, but I think the views (on a clear day) should be fantastic, from what I've seen posted up on the web. On the way down into Italy (via Mont Blanc) we'll be going the back way into Turin & the roads there look good. I'll post up a review & photos when I get back. More info gladly received please.

Sorry, I've done a few, but long ago and I really can't remember.

Stelvio is one I ordered my dad to take smile and I remember being very disappointed. Did it several times on the way to Croatia, out of habit.

I'm not saying don't do it. It has lots of motoring history attached to it and that alone makes it appealing. Just don't expect too much.

What's inspired me to do the Stelvio is last years Top Gear programme. I'm expecting quite a bit of traffic, but the 'Grale should hopefully make light work of it. At the end of the day, this is my 1st European mountain pass & as you say, Stelvio's got a lot of history. Anyway, does anyone know when it actually gets closed to traffic please??? Thanks.

Have you done any mountain roads before? If you haven't then you'll be blown away! I did it recently and can recommend it. Only fly in the ointment was the amount of traffic on it going at the sort of pace that would put a snail to shame! Best bet would be to hit it early or late on a Sunday when it's quiet. I drove from Geneve to Klosters on a sunny Sunday evening on the way there and the roads were just empty, literally, drove for a solid hour without seeing another car in any direction. Also, if you can find it, there's a secondary route that runs almost to the top of the pass which is just hairpin after hairpin for a couple of miles when it turns into a dirt track for the rest of the way. That's good as well!

I think for views though the St Bernard pass has it beaten.

There's a selection of webcams here >>>> http://webcam.popso.it/stelvio.php?CAMERE_PASSO
which will give you an idea of weather conditions. We did it in September in glorious sunshine, following week.....three foot of snow.

i think if i had eaten a meal at a restaurant which was naff, i don't think i would venture there again, habit or no habit, would you ?
plus i think there are easier/quicker ways to travel to croatia.

Chrisr29, if you count Hardknott & Wrynose (up in the Lake District) as mountain passes, then yes. Really looking forward to this trip as it's been in the planning since last year. Hey, so what if it's raining, snowing or whatever, it should be a great experience. I've got a set of brake pads on order for the old girl.

hello lawrence,
good website with pass open/closed info:
http://www.alpineroads.com/passstatus.php
if you plan your route with viamichelin.com, you will be unable to plan a route via any closed passes.
not much use on the day you set off, so i would always recommend a "plan b" route.

i always plan using microsoft autoroute, convert route details to an itn. file, then simply download in to your tom tom (or similar).
if there's a few of us, we do slight amendments daily, at breakfast, to allow for any changes due to weather, tiredness, hangovers etc etc

if you need any help, just shout.

I don't know those routes, been to the Lake District but don't recall them. How high are they? The Stelvio is something like 2500 metres. High enough to affect vehicle performance.

Don't listen to the negative vibes on here. The mountain passes are awesome! Arriving at the top mid summer to see snow is pretty cool as well.

AKA Passo di Rombo, I've done it on a bike, and 100BHP felt like a moped at the summit (2500M sounds right).

That was July, as I remember, and plenty of snow at the sides of the road. I think it'll usually be shut in October, or at least I'd work out the alternative route you're going to take instead, which could add a day to your journey.

Went down to Merano, beautiful area, enjoy yourself!

To Chrisr29,
Hopefully the link works, but if not, they're both a mere 393metresfrown. The passes are to the West of the Langdale Peaks which in turn are NW of Ambleside. Both are VERY narrow, but Hardknott has a lot of hairpins, but doesn't compare to Stelvio.

To F308MAN,
Thanks for that link, it was sent to me earlier as well. I've heard a lot about the St Bernards pass so I'll take a browse through that site when I've chance & see what's on offer. Back in Sept '06, I went down to Turin for the Lancia Centenary and vowed to go back & do a pass, the roads look fantastic & the scenery......A short(ish) vid from the "Public Day" in Turin where all 300 Lancia's decended onto Piazza San Carlos from 4 different locations, and we had a few ex works Grp A & Grp B cars in our convoy. Fantastic week with a police escort everytime we went in/out of the city plus doing a standing start with an S4!!!
