I've recently moved to Bristol and would like any advice on great driving roads in the South West (Somerset area) or across the water in South Wales (North Wales is a bit far for an afternoon jaunt)

Your starter for 10 is this:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Br...

A4069 from Brynaman towards Llandovery (from Brizzl, go M4 all the way past Swansea to Pont Abraham, follow the signs for Ammanford, then follow the signs for Brynaman).

Once you've done the A4069, follow the A40 towards Brecon. You'll get to an island where right is signposted A470. Take that exit.

Keep driving uphill, and after the road flattens out you'll go past a small reservoir on your right. Shortly after is a right turn for "Neath" or "Hirwaun". A4059 anyway. Turn right.

Over the moors, you'll get to an island.

Turn right towards Neath and Swansea.

Keep following that road until you see the signs for M4 East (Cardiff).

Return home.

Loads of choice. Head to Brecon and then take the B roads to Builth Wells through Upper & Lower Chappel (cant remember the name of the road but its brilliant).

From there head towards Rhyader then the Ellan Valley.

Have a look on this thread

Lot of Mendip, top fun. eg start going up Cheddar Gorge (if you have a noisy car, all the better) and keep going up the B3135 all the way to the Ploughboy Pub at Green Ore. And relax.

Head to Chepstow and then take either of the B roads from the racecourse, one goes to Usk, one goes to Monmouth. Both great!

Right, I agree with the chap who mentioned the mendip road out of Cheddar gorge. B3135, head east on this, but when you come to a cross roads turn right (old Bristol Road) and head south, its not long but there some great corners there. After that head south towards Glastonbury/Street, get on the B3151 from Street towards Somerton but turn left at the top of the hill crossroads onto Reynards Way. This is a great swoopy rollercoaster mile or two. Drive it, turn around and then discover that it is even more fun going the other way!! redface) Both are usually quiet roads, but being the countryside there is always a Badger/Deer/Rabbit danger so beware if its early morning or nightime.

Try the B4560, Its just off of the Heads of the Valleys road. Its a pretty decent one if you wanted a circle, you could go across to Brecon and back down the a470 to get back 'home'

yes

Alternative route there and back: go across the old Severn Bridge (M48), exit at Chepstow and take the B road to Usk, then to Abergavenny. Great road.

A4069 is a great road especially the middle part with the hairpins.

For roads in the southwest id recomend the A396 from tiverton to Minehead. Gets better the further you go north with some great blind corners that tighten and open again.

If you're reluctant to spend the bridge toll, there are a selection of interesting roads to the North East of town. The A420 to Chippenham isn't bad, and the A46 to Nailsworth can be fun too. Add all the good ones around Tetbury and Malmesbury and that should keep you busy for an afternoon.
