norman156 - snap!

Was having a quick smoke break, left the hamster in his cage tho - hes quit!

I live near bamford, so snakes pass hsa been a daily drive since i was 17. Sadly its gone downhill in ten years, more caravans and slow drivers than ever before. When i say slow drivers, i mean people who brake at every slight bend - out of pure terror i suspect due to all the "dangers" of snakes pass.

On the topic of the snakes pass in, watch yourself when driving past. On the way TO sheffield direction you come round a blind left to be greeted with a pub exit, ive seen many many people nearly rear end someone there! Mr flatcap takes it real slow after his big lunch!

I came down the Snake this morning after going the other way via the Woodhead, and quite enjoyed the blast out. There seemed to be a couple of other guys out having a good trip, and the cloud on the tops made it more fun.

Would love to go on a bit of a drive before winter well and truly sets in, is the snakes pass a bit too dangerous to have a proper go at in a rear wheel drive mid engined car?

I think it would be fine, as long as you don't act like an idiot and try to overdo it on the exits from the many corners.

personally these days, and this weather (its very icey here) i woulndt have a blast of any kind on the snake. Ive been on it 3 times this week, and every time ive seen an idiot overtake on a blindbend.

Could you be you, me or anyone coming the other way. just not worth it mate!

It was deserted on Thursday when I went over it, only me, a couple of other cars, and the Range Rover in front of me. I didn't see any daft driving until I got the Rivelin side of Ladybower, and some guy in a 1.4 Polo went past me doing a daft speed..

Not at all; I manage OK. The biggest hazard on the Snake has been mentioned - weather, Sunday drivers and shed draggers.

It's as dangerous as you choose to make it.

Take heed of the blind bends, water and mud run off from the hills, poor surface and drainage, and ice / tree sap under the trees and you will be fine.

Simple really, just read the road and drive accordingly.
I drove it in the dark for the first time yesterday. I'd add to the advice above: Don't be rushed by faster cars, if someone steams up behind you, let them pass.

The same is said for the Woodhead.

Well we braved the cold today for a trip to Snake Pass and a few other select roads in the area.
The A6024 is a great road!
A couple of pictures of the Z4 and M5 but we were too busy driving to take many more.

The road over Holme Moss is class, Ben!
Did you do the 'full' route? Head from The Yorkshire side of it, over and down onto Woodhead Road and then cut off onto the Glossop road. that is also a lovely road!

Then you can turn left onto Snakes Pass, and then wind your way up to the Woodhead Pass again where it starts just north of Sheffield to bring you back to Holme Moss again.

Those hairpins at the bottom of Holme Moss on the Huddersfield side are crazy on the way back down!

Yep, I think we did all of that. A nice warm up for a trip to Wales in a week.

Holme Moss! Bliss smile Do that on my way to Oldham at night for work at least once a week. I've done some filming on there too:

That road should be used as a hill-climb venue smile

I managed to get out on Monday afternoon and did the snake, strines and woodhead, then cut down "devils elbow" into Glossop, excellent route:

Ahhh i'm looking forward to tomorrow evening and so is the MX5.

Leaving Sheffield in rush hour - (not looking forward too) meeting a friend at the Ladybower Inn, some food and chat, then i think i'll heav over the snake latish and head back via the Woodhead.

May well take the hood down for the trip back.... late night, cold weather, and hjopefully clear roads and skies!
