Watched it already chris, laughed my behind off at the part where you mentioned the nova, and what it must look like when you come hooning the other way!! If we can organise a meet, can we make it any month other than may or september, im away both months and would hate to miss this, even if i do only have 110 rampaging nags under my french bonnet!!

Think in the first video he says the starting point is Glossop. May be wrong though.

Glossop, going along the A57 Snake Pass/Road towards SHeffield and turning off after Ladybower to head towards Strines reservoir and then joins the A616 near Upper Midhope / Midhopestones at the end of the 1st video.

Thanks again chaps smile It was indeed Glossop that I started from. With this gorgeous weather we're having atm, I feel an early sunday morning meeting coming on real soon. Not this weekend, but perhaps next weekend?

CW, I appreciate you're video (when's the widescreen HD version coming to DVD?) and commentary and agree with what you say about some of the route.

I could see you itching at the bit to floor it in some places - even just watching the video I was willing you to go faster and faster, Just glad you had more willpower than me.

The first bit where you turned off to Strines, is where I'd normally have carried on the A57 for a bit longer and turn at Hollow Meadows to avoid some of the really rough roads you found - unfortunately this means driving on some quite narrow bits and you end up coming out Oughtibridge on the A6102.

For the Holmfirth route (coming off the A road and onto the B road), that was purely a choice of two routes to make a circuit - as I've pointed out on some of the other threads, I'd only posted that route as it looked fair for most cars. A good combination of tight & twisties with come fast (when appropriate) sections for the more lardy cars.

BTW, if you'd gone right at the little fork just after Holmfirth, you'd have ended up on the A635 (Holmfirth Road) which takes you across the top of Black Hill and past lots of reservoirs before dropping back down into Staleybridge.

The easy way to miss out Holmfirth completely is to turn off the A616 and onto the A628 Woodhead Pass and then turn up the A6024 Woodhead Road, but turn before you enter Holmfirth and take the A635 to Staleybridge instead. However that misses the B6105 (Devil's Elbow) between the A628 and Glossop - so you'd have to go back on the A628 and then turn down the B6105 back to Glossop. You've got to either compromise the route somewhere or double-back to do all the good bits.

Alternative missing out Holmfirth

My circuits in this area can be as short at 20 miles or as long as 200, depending on where I go - as far up as Skipton and as far south as Derby as part of my 'Peak District' runs.

I even used to do some very quick runs between Glossop and Sheffield via the A628 - but the SPECS cameras have stopped that bit of fun, so I've had to be more inventive in my routes, and some of the roads I remember taking in the past seem to have disappeared completely, but I blame the dementia for that.

You should see some of my Welsh routes, they make the Mille Miglia look like a Sunday drive - although some of the roads do get VERY narrow and I tend to cross them off my list for next time - but in some places there is no option, especially when you know the nearest super unleaded is 50 miles away!

Widescreen HD version coming soon biggrin (I wish)
At that time of day, I value my clean licence, so keep within +/- 10 mph most of the time smile
I've never tried the bit after strines you mention, however, I drive a scoob, so rough roads aren't a problem smile
Regarding Holmfirth and the right fork, looking at the map, I realise that's the road that takes you past the Ford Inn, which is where I come out when doing my long route to work in the evenings after going over Digley reservoir. It's an excellent run down to Oldham from there, and the Ford is perhaps a good detour to stop for a coke?
I know what you're saying about different routes, there are loads in the area and it's difficult to get a good balance between a flowing route and hitting all the good roads. I think that route is pretty good, and certainly an excellent intro to the area.

Talking of Welsh routes, just last month we did this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7PpVOPN3VY
it's in six parts! smile
enjoy biggrin

(are you marshalling at Oulton this weekend, as I may pop along for the trackday to watch)

Me and a mate would possibly be up for this, but next weekend is the F1, and my working hours are quite strange at the moment, so i'll keep my eye on this thread and see what gets sorted smile

Yep, im up for this too, but sadly the weekend after this is our lass's birthday, and i value my soft bits waaay to much to even think of deserting her to come for a run out! She would want to be there anyway, she is as much a petrolhead as i am, and loves her speed!

I don't marshal on track days as that's something done by the circuit staff employed (and paid) to do that. I just do the racing events on weekends.

My first event at Oulton is on Saturday 28th March which includes BARC NW Sports/Saloons, Classic Modified Saloons (including Blue Oval Saloons), Classic Group 1 Touring Cars, Post Historic Touring Cars, Historic Touring/Classic Saloon Car Series, Pre-'93 Touring Cars, Superkarts.

Good video! My favourite bit is the end of the 2nd one as you climb Holme Moss and then on from there cloud9

As an alternative to going through Holmfirth (unless you are a Last of the Summer wine fan), I thought the following change would be good.

map

The amended route looks quite nice too, cutting past some reservoirs before rejoining just below Holme. I've never been on those small roads, so they might be crap, but it looks like a viable alternative.

Sunday 26th April! Looking at the calendar that's the best date I can come up with smile All others before then I'm working the sunday night (so stay in a night sleep pattern on the sat night) or it's easter bank holiday.

I was thinking of an early morning run, or an early evening run.
Morning would be quite, evening would give us better chance to stop for coke somewhere (ford inn?)

Thoughts? biggrin
