Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone could offer advice on driving from the UK to Florence, as the Mrs and I will be doing the journey in August to get to our Wedding.

We've booked the 3am tunnel crossing, and will be setting off from pretty close to the tunnel, so I'm not too concerned about the UK side of things.

At the moment, we were planning to avoid Paris and the A6 and take the A26 to troyes, then the A5 and A51 to Dijon, then the A39 and 40 through to the MB tunnel where we would possibly stop overnight (somewhere like Courmayer unless someone can recommend anywhere).

From there on, we would take the motorways past Allessandria, Piacenza, Parma, Modena, Bologna and then down to Florence.. Reading up on it, I realise that it's not exactly a fun filled route, and I was wondering what the pro's and cons are of the other ways down (i.e Switzerland or an alternative tunnel).

We've got experience of driving in France and Italy (particularly the stretch down to Le Mans) but only know the motorway routing around Turin and Milan by reputation, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Currently planning to do it in a day as some Friends managed it previously, and we have 4 days before the wedding to recover, but we're not quite decided....

The second part of my query is what the best route to take from Florence to Uzes in Languedoc is. We will be taking the full day over it, so I would like to take a slightly more picturesque route if it's possible, with somewhere interesting to stop for lunch. Can anyone recommend anything - I'm not sure what the coastal motorway is like - it looked ok on Top Gear laugh?

If you have time try and take the old road (D996) from Reims to Dijon. Very highly recommended.

I take it you mean the old F1 track/stands out in the middle of the countryside - We'll be stopping there on the way back as we'll have more time.

The trip down is looking like 15 hours, so it could be a detour too far biggrin

Edit: Just realised how stupid a comment that was...

Don't take the MB, but go over the little San Bernardo Pass http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_St_Bernard_Pas... It'll probably add a couple of hours to your journey, but I promise you that you will not regret it.
