I'm going to be in Gent for a few days and have a day free.

Are there any roads within a sensible distance worth seeking out? Or should I just enjoy the Belgian beer?

Option two sounds far more sensible to me.

You are unlikely to get much higher than a motorway
overpass in that part of the world.

I've always found the roads in Belgium to be mind numbingly boring. Option 2 is a good idea or, if you feel the need, option 3, Holland

Holland is FAR worse.

Near Gent there's not much interesting... In West Flanders, you could find some interesting roads (Rally of Ypres is run there).
Some amazingly nice roads in the Ardennes though (that's where Spa-Francorchamps is), but a long way from Gent.

Oh and lots of coppers

Enjoy the beer, there's none in holland, nor in the UK
