Brilliant.

It would be good to see your trip set out on a map. I wouldn't mind doing a route similar to the one you've completed!
Thanks everyone for the positive comments. Doing the writeup was a lot of fun and helped to burnish the memories.

I have a set of Tomtom .itn files - please feel free to PM me if interested.

plenty - great stuff mate.

Can i just ask what sort of mileage the Porsche is on?

I'm looking at a toy for next year and keep looking at 968s but all the ones i've seen are 100k+ miles. Are they a safe buy at this sort of mileage?

Also, is yours a daily driver?

And final question - are they a 2+2, i.e. 2 front seats and 2 small ones in the rear, or just a plain 2 seater?

Following this trip my car is just shy of 145K. The newest 968s are now 14 years old and there aren't many garage queens out there, so high miles are de rigeur. Mine is not a daily driver but I would have no hesitation using it as such.

The 968 is one of the last old-school Porsches, built when cost of manufacture wasn't a major consideration and components were heavily over-engineered, so these cars can handle the miles as long as they are looked after. My car pulls hard and feels tight but has had many major bits refreshed over the years, as should have any car you are looking to buy.

The common wear and tear items are well documented; parts aren't the cheapest but once replaced tend to last for a long time. Drive a few, scrutinise the service histories and you should easily tell the good 'uns from the tired ones. As with any car of this vintage, the purchase price is just the cost of entry; put aside a healthy chunk of budget (£2-3K) for sorting things out upon purchase (even the best ones will need a few things doing). I've only had my car for six months, but long-time owners report big bills every 2-3 years although in between the 968 shouldn't be particularly expensive to maintain, especially if you are able to do some of the work yourself.

The Coupe and Sport variants are 2+2 while the Clubsport versions are strict two-seater although could be optioned or retrofitted with rear seats (which are truly suitable only for children).

There are lots of more details available on the web (such as on the PH Porsche forum). I have most of the useful links bookmarked; shoot me a PM if you like these.

Also while the rear seats are for novelty value only the boot is truly vast for a sports car (particularly once 'said seats are folded down). If practicality is at a premium it's hard to think of a better real sports car than the front engined Porsches.

That said, we did once get four in my 924S on the way back from the pub. wink
