I'm finally finishing up my studies in Edinburgh. Been over here for two years and have always dreamed about bringing over the M3 from Ireland for a blast up the highlands. Never had a chance to until now, well its not much of a chance but a chance non the less.
I have a day for a quick hoon and would like some suggestions from some locals as to a good route to take.

I'll be starting off from Edinburgh, early Monday 18th May morning, and have to be at Stranraer Port at 7pm that evening.
I know its not a very long window for a tour, but what route would you reccomend that would take in good driving roads and some good scenery along the way.
Was thinking to head North West for half the journey, then South West to arrive at Stranraer.

Thanks,
Barry

You could also try posting in the scotland section for a greater response.

If you've to be at Stranraer then may i recommend staying within the south west of Scotland, Down from Edinburgh you've got the beeftub (A701) which brings you to Moffat, head for Dumfries then you could either do the Eskdalemuir route from Lockerbie, head on through D&G out into Moniave, across to New Galloway then up the Ayr road and off to Stranraer.

That sounds like a perfect day to me, so much so i know what i'm going to be doing as soon as i've ironed out the map and fuelling on my civic.

Good thinking, but that route will take you through one of those 40 mile average speed traps (once you get to Ayrshire) so might be better following the Clyde coast route rather than the '77.

Dont know the ayrshire routes that well but I have heard that the average speed camera roads are worth avoiding so a little deviation after ayr would be wise.
