I'm heading into London tomorrow, and a bit tight on time in the morning so i'm going to take the M1 straight. On the way back to Loughborough i've got a bit more time on my hands so I was wondering if there are any good driving roads on this route?

Is there any way I can get off the M1 and drive on some decent secondary roads for some time, then get back on it towards Leicester for example?

Now what's the word I'm looking for... ah yes. Oxymoron.

However, If I had to do that journey and wanted something other than hell, I'd head west up the M40 and then either break off at Thame and head north through the Chilterns, or for a longer trip, do the back doubles along the Fosse Way. I spent 20 years of my life on these roads, and they aren't good ('cos they're busy), but they do have some nice twisty bits from time to time. (And some very pretty villages en-route)

The A507 is good between the A1 (at Bladock) and the A10. It's a bit far east but, depending on where you're coming from, you could maybe incorporate it? That stretch is very good indeed and more than worth it, but the rest is nothing special, so don't be alarmed if it seems dull at first.
