Southampton to (near) Croydon

Like it says in the title basically...
I'm off on a road trip down to see some friends in Southampton soon, and planning to visit family in Purley/Sanderstead/Croydon areas afterwards.
I've only ever used the M3/A31/A3/M25 route to make this trip before and while I like the A31 (olde-worlde DC sections and SC bits with good sightlines for "making progress") I'm wondering if there are some more "fulfilling" roads that I could take, along roughly the same route? I don't know Hampshire very well myself as I usually just take the most direct route down to the New Forest etc but as I'll be on my own I fancy a bit of an "enthusiastic" drive.
Any suggestions gratefully appreciated
