Last thursday night coming down a road to home we came to some roadworks the sort where they spay the road surface with bitumen and then dump huge piles of granite chippings on top and leave it to the motorist to rollthem down and spread them about, we slowed down to walking pace and crawled along, even so with cars coming the other way my car suffered stonechip damage to the o/s/f wheel, headlight bonnet and bumper, Estimated repair costs £1780.00. The council have told me to send them the claim, but i think they are just paying lip service to me. Has anyone succeeded in getting them to settle a similar claim?????

Read in papers long time ago about some guy ( Merc I think )- parked in town ,after surface dressing - he took council to town for a full respray -but that's only I've heard of .Incidentally , recently complained about some bad gulleys to my county council ,as I suspect ( but can't prove ) that it caused sudewall damage -they offered to send claim forms - but again it could be lipservice -didn't take them up on it as I couldn't prove anything .

Report it. Highways depts DO budget for accidental damage, and have people who do nothing but deal with claims (and they're not sharks who look for any way out they can, they're normals like you and me, admin bods). And if you hit a road sign, you can bet that they will claim off YOUR insurance for it.

We had the same done down my street, now everytime the sun comes out the tar melts and then the stones come up and belt the st out of my paintwork! Whats even worse is the road was fine untill they stone chipped it! With what we pay for road tax and fuel duty why the hell should we have to drive on a fking rally track! I spoke to the high ways agency and was told that this is the method they use to reusurface roads and that loose stones will not damage my vehicle! As usual it a cheap lash up and when you comlain its like banging your head up the wall! NOT HAPPY RANT OVER.

Can we pull together and do something about it?

As I type there is a kind man doing some chip repair work for me on the drive. The company Chips Away was recommended to me by another friend of ours who is in the New Mini section. Apparently they did great work so I have gone for them. I shall send the council the bill.

This is in addition to the already reported condition of the road in the surroundings. We already have rally tracks in some places.
