Hello all,

Andrew and I have been working on this 3.0litre Automatic BMW Z3. It’s fairly high spec from factory with its red leather interior, heated seats, split rims and a very useable 230bhp under the bonnet – A far cry from my everyday transport! hehe

It has had a knock to the offside front end and was initially bought as an experiment to try out a new painters, however they backed out and so we have been left to carry out the repairs and paint ourselves. Andrew has experience in dealing with/restoring Maserati’s and Ferrari’s where there is little room for error and I have been learning the ways of water based paints and lacquer, having previously only used cellulose and thinners.

Andrew has began to panel beat the bonnet back to its normal state and reforming the curvature of the bonnet (in progress);

Finding the hi and low spots, using filler to eliminate the imperfections;

Forming the correct shape;

A coating of primer;

We are currently preparing the bonnet for the base coat of paint and finally lacquer;

Andrew and I will try keep this updated as and when we make progress.

Regards,
Tom

You forgot to mention the wheels Tom biggrin

More updates will follow, once Tom has returned from holiday (it's his project, so it's going to be his sweat and elbow grease!) and there's a whole heap of sanding to be done before the final stages of paint smile

We'll be playing with the 3M PPS paint gun pot system and the FULL water based Llechler paint system supplied by T.D.Distribution in Port Sunlight (0151 643 1171, they do mail order and will supply entire kits based on the number of panels that need painting)

For those interested, the water based paint system means that at no point will be we using solvent based products, so the paintwork application process will be more environmentally friendly and for anybody wanting to spray small pieces in something other than a booth, it will be less likely to cause the health problems associated with traditional two pack systems hehe

Well above my head but interested to see the progress and the finished product. Will you be including detailed info on how you do the split rims as well? I have a set which need a refresh so would like to see how you get on

A quick update. . . . Tom has been working hard on his little project hehe and has finally started flatting the primer down, so I can get on and paint it.
It’s now a little smoother and almost ready for the basecoat to go on . . . I also seem to be down one giant 4x4 parts wagon and up one bright orange mini!

Happy at work, using a G10 bottle to help get the contours of the bonnet right

And stealing my truck, as apparently you cant get a BMW front bumper and a pair of MINI sills in a proper mini wink
