I'm not a fan of diesels but I've been offered a very (very, very) cheap Escort Van and it will cost about a quarter of what I'm currently paying to insure my trusted Rover 213S.

As far as I can tell it needs a bit of welding where the rear leaf springs mount the chassis (I have an alternative plan for that already), new number plates and brake light switch for the M.O.T. Obviously pads, discs, a good service and other consumables as well.

So my question to you is....

What should I do next?

I can turn a quick profit weighing the thing in. £150 per Ton in these parts.
I can repair the van get it through the M.O.T and sell it on for a slightly bigger profit. £300-£400-ish van when fixed.
I can run the van and sell/restore the Rover/Alfa.
I can sell the 1.8 Perkins lump and fit something like a Dura-torque Turbo Diesel.
I can take the leafsprung beam out (make a trailer or specticle with it), fit a Jag' axle and replace the Perkins engine with a V8.

Any other options or ideas apreciated as I now throw it open to the forum. wink

I was thinking the Focus rear beam is an all in one rear coil conversion. All I would need to do is make a set of mounting plated and weld them to the existing chassis rail. Binning the leaf spring beam so I can make a trailer or specticle (towing dolly) and sell to pay for the conversion.

Petrol conversion from a diesel are a pain in the cheeks and for a van if I apply the hastle x power / handling formula it doesn't do any favors. All the diesel running gear is there so a modern TD with a Holset/JCB/Truck turbo would be easier and as much fun. wink

I haven't looked yet (or picked up the van). It's early days.

I can understand the "Rat look" keep it as it is consept; but I have some paint in my shed that'll tidy it up a bit at least (if I'm using the van for work). smile

Rest assured I'll not be fitting an MC Rallying "Cosworth" kit or RS2000 bonnet. Brakes maybe but no chav crap.

good good.

MC Rallying ......... There's a memory. Had one of their splitters on my XR2i rep. Took the bodyshop weeks to make it fit properly.

Have fun. Keep a build thread

Potentially this could be my Practical Performance Car £999 Challenge entry so I'm posting on that forum as well. The 1.8 Mondeo engine is good because it's cheap, plenty of them about, solid and I don't need to change the capacity on the log book. The TD is only an extra £40 to insure as well. wink

fair play. Would have thought ebay/scrappies would see £200 for an engine, seeing change from that full car buy.

Big exhaust, big intercooler, big turbo, and all from various donor vehicles. Thats your way wink

Nah, go old school. Jag rear IRS (chromed) and Rover V8 up front running through cherry bombs plus big chromed blower sticking up through hole in bonnet. Finish with a nice seventies paint job and some chrome wolfrace slots. Add vermillion draylon interior and mattress in back and the job's a good 'un.

Winning combination of insanity and practicality right there!
